Spokane Archives: Omarop

Controlled by the Spokane Collective, these archives have a objects and texts of magical importance. There are two levels of reference libraries that are available to the public. These are to ‘encourage the presence and study of magic in Moudon’. Being part of the Spokane Collective also gives access to additional libraries as well as items that can be used or borrowed, on a basis of standing. Most members of the Spoken Archives are magic users and there is a complex hierarchy into how members sit and should be addressed. The head of this branch is Atir Guzbausch. He is a heavy set, olive-skinned half-orc that has a knack for abjuration magic. He is jovial and welcomes all to learn a little magic.   The archive public levels are home to magical texts that will help magic users level 1-4. There are even a few spells that can be copied down provided that readers have the proper inks and papers to transcribe them. A small kiosk sits at the back of the first level that spells supplies but for great mark ups for the convenience of it.

Purpose / Function

A repository of magical items and books that is run by the Spokane Collective as representative of their knowledge and influence in Omarop

Design

There are two main portions to the Archives. The main level is two storey library collection with the first having a circulation desks , tables to work at, and the public access archives. The second storey is member-access only but can be seen from the ground floor. This whole space is cylindrical in shape and 60 ft tall with a 50 ft diameter.   There is also a spiral staircase that heads down into the restricted item/relic archives. This is guarded by a statuesque Death Knight controlled by the collective that looks like it is made of stone to the average person. Anyone caught trying to pass through without access will be held at bay. Anyone stupid enough to try and steal something will be dealt with mercilessly.

Entries

On the ground floor there are the main doors and an employee/emergency exit door. These are located on opposite ends of each other. There is only the one guarded entry to the lower level archive. in the centre stairwell.   There are heavy glass windows on the first and second storeys of the main space with beautiful stained glass scenes. These are all warded from simple entry.

Sensory & Appearance

Inside, the archive smells of paper and ink. It is a scent-free zone. Though the lower levels contain relics that do have various scents of their own. Some of them are quiet pungent. It is always just slightly on the cooler side in the Archives to keep the books in good condition and dry but not brittle. There is a sort of very quiet hum of people thinking and working but largely very quiet.

Denizens

The Archives are quite impeccably clean and likely one of the only places in the city so utterly devoid of vermin. The basements do contain some unusual beings

including a Elder Oblex
. Otherwise most of the regular denizens are the various members of the Archive.

Valuables

Most of the treasures and valuables can be found in basement including the items that can be loaned out as well as a number of more rare and powerful objects and beings.

Hazards & Traps

There is of course the Death Knight as well as the various dangerous items and beings in the basement level. On the roof, the fiends can reanimate and be controlled in the instance of a wide scale defence. There are also various alarms, glyphs of warding, and other spells to keep the archives covered.

Architecture

A structure of marble and granite, sturdy and climate controlled to keep the books and items within it at a perfect temperature and humidity. There are impressive magical chandelier systems to illumunate rows upon rows of shelving. The roof can be seen from outside Omarop as a blue gem tone rounded roof that sparkles gently with spots like stars during the night.

Defenses

Armed down to the crenellations with abjuration magic to prevent the theft of any of their goods as well as to shield the minds of its scholars from prying influences that might try to glean information not meant for them.

History

One of the oldest buildings in the now expanding Emerald District, the Spokane Archive wears its history as friezes detailing the great works of the founding spellcasters and bruises from attempts to break in to it litter the outside.   One of the most famous attempted heists was four decades ago by an excommunicated member of the collective, Dorsa Falstaff. With the help of two of her apprentices and a hired bruiser, Dorsa made an almost successful attempt to break into the Archive through the roof. Using a spell of her own creation to summon a legion of fiends and attempting to break the weakest wards on the building, Dorsa very nearly succeeded at getting inside. Unluckily for her, Lore (Head Curator at the time) transmuted the fiends into stone statues that now sit around the ledges of the roof like disorganized gargoyles. The carved wards had been damaged before Dorsa was stopped, so they had to be shorn down entirely to fix the sigils once more.

Tourism

Most of those that visit the Spokane Archive are members of the collective or wish to become perspective members. This particular branch has a public access section that has many home and lifestyle magic spells that are offered for free by Atir.   Restricted access is only for members of the collective.   If party members gain access into the vaults of this archive they also have access to:
  • 2 x alchemy jugs
  • 1 x amulet of proof against detection or location
  • 1 x Animated Shield
  • 1 x Staff of Serpents
  • 1 x spell-binding ring.
Only one item can be removed from an Archive at a time per person. At the end of 15 days the items teleports back to the archive unless a renewal of contract it made.
