Drain

"Everyone has a job here. If they don't, they are usually under you." - C-B922, 3rd Quadrant Plant Operator
Drain is the antipode of Fountain, and as a result never sees the Moon, being on the other side of Moontides. It is a heavily industrialized town with a focus on power generation and electricity export, as all the longitudinal rivers of the planet drain into a cavern at the centre of the city, at the exact antipode of the Moon Citadel of Fountain.   The cavern is endless and various expeditions have dug deep into to follow the water and explore. The caves are also full of mineral ores of all sorts and there is a big industry on mining all those substances. Between this and the hydroelectric plants on each of the rivers, everyone living in drain has a continuous job of maintaining whatever small part of the giant machine they are a single cog of.   Most of the rivers merge together the closer they get to drain, until they merge into 4 main rivers that themselves merge as they enter the cavern. The 4 rivers form a few hundred kilometres away from the centre, which led to one big hydroelectric plant and dam to be built into each river. The dams are never permanently closed so as to not block the water cycle of the planet, but they are raised and lowered often to drive the water wheels generating electricity. There are many workers monitoring, maintaining and repairing things on different parts of each plant, including the transmission lines that all diverge out into cities as far as the equator of the planet.   What ground isn't covered by each plant is instead covered by farmland, rich with water provided by extensive irrigation from the big rivers, providing food for the people of Drain. The farms provide a third option for people interested in neither the plants or the caverns at the pole, with everything from growing crops to taking care of all sorts of animals providing food, fibres, etc. However, nobody lives in the farms themselves, as there are several hotspots of brutalist complexes offering housing and other needs withing walkable distance of each hotspot. People living in each hotspot is either expected to contribute to the welfare of their hotspot in some way or to work in any of the plants, farms or the mines. This often results in most people living the city once they retire or have children, as the surface level of Drain and its fast pace of life does not often have anything to offer for people not working. Other than, perhaps, the mines and the underground communities.   The more adventurous peoples can decide to go down the cavern at the antipode where the water drains. Many go as part of mining expeditions, as the water itself has formed many of the caverns and unearthed ore in caves of all shapes and sizes, and even though centuries have passed not all of it has been explored as of yet. Most of the early materials found were used in the construction of the power plants and housing complexes, and since then expeditions have slowed down to reduce the rate at which minerals are consumed.   Not everyone going down there goes for the mines or looking for jobs however, as some of the caves have been excavated far enough to allow enough space for smaller underground villages to form. Each of these villages are usually next to one of the many springs of water going backwards from Drain towards Fountain, providing both food and water to the villages and even power to the ones that have their own smaller water wheels. It is one of the popular spots for retirees from Drain and other people looking to start families
