The Great Leviathan's Prison
Jorrunde reports to Tertius that a great maelstrom has been opening and closing outside of the port city of Paraetonium on Ilfor, a city controlled by the Orleander Throne. These openings and closings seem to be structured and orchestrated and controlled. Further, there are stories of the Great Leviathan disappearing and she believes that the two are linked.
Having multiple emergencies happening at once, the party split their forces, and half of them follow Jorrunde on her ship, The Seaward. She takes them to Paraetonium, where they see smoke from fires all outside of the city. Heading into the city, they discover that there are a plethora of magical items being sold, all of which are crafted from coral.
They also discovered that the fires were to burn an invasive kudzu plant that grew at alarming speeds toward the city. It had overrun outlying villages and refugees were now packed in the city's lower class districts.
The party tries to get information, but find that they would have much more access in the city if they had citizenship papers. They meet with the head of the thieves guild in the city, Jim Gallows, who tells them that there was an artificer named Argon who was supposed to bring an item of value, but he did not succeed in securing it. He gave the party three options for payment for the forged citizenship papers--the items he failed to bring, the head of Argon who failed, or 10,000 gold which was how much he valued the items at.
They go to find Argon, to see if he should be slain, and find that he is harboring a young Tiefling girl, Mimsey, who is a refugee from one of the outlying villages. He is also a citizen and he explains that he took the job from Jim Gallows, but when the vines began to overrun the village of Ostia, he was unable to reach it to bring the items back for Gallows.
The party ready themselves to head out with Argon leading them to Ostia to recover Gallows' goods. They find the vines difficult to move through, fearing that stopping to came would cause them to be overrun. The movement is slow and tiring, but they make it to Ostia and fine that the kudzu vines are animating corpses of the villagers that try to fight the party off.
The party defeats the kudzu controlled dead and move into a secret stash house beneath the chapel in Ostia. The party notes that it was once dedicated to the Old Gods and spirits, but was overtaken and reclaimed for the All-Father. The Oleander Throne, however, never found the stash house beneath the chapel as it was still devoted to an ancient Fey spirit--Acacia of the Court of Rampant Green. More kudzu controlled corpses attacked the party while they worked to open the chamber leading to the stash.
Once opened, an avatar of Acacia exited and fought the party, halting when she noticed Zadock Marlin's symbols of the Great Leviathan on him, immediately questioning why he had them. The fighting ceased and the party spoke with Acacia. She said that the Oleander forces had captured Narahm, known to them as the Great Leviathan. She was his lover and she was sending her vines out to tear down the city to free them.
The party offered to free him instead, but Acacia told them if they failed freeing him, then they would stop the fires so her vines could tear down the city brick by brick. The party recovered Gallows' stash, as well as Narahm's spear, Gáe Bulg, that Acacia told them to take to Narahm.
The party returned to Paraetonium and gave Jim Gallows what they needed and received forged citizenship papers. With the papers in hand and led by Argon, the party sailed to the Great Lighthouse, where it seemed the magic controlling the maelstrom originated. There they tricked the wizard, Silence, into giving them a tour where he boasted of his accomplishments.
Silence stated that they had trapped Acacia and he is beneath the maelstrom. He is bound and pierced by a cold iron spear. When his blood drips and touches the ground, it forms into coral which contains great magical property and potential, making it easy to craft magic items from it and he gives rings of water breathing to the entire party. He shows the party how the maelstrom is opened at the top of the lighthouse and they see Narahm, trapped in his glamoured form, chained and bleeding. He tells them that the archmage is on his way to see the progress that he has made in capturing and bleeding the ArchFey who had been keeping their navies at bay.
The party left and made plans. However, the next day, they discovered the archmage had arrived and Argon was being interrograted. The party decided to create a distraction at the walls, then to free Narahm themselves. The party went out and slew a group of Oleanders and their living spells burning the approaching kudzu. They swiftly returned to the city.
As the kudzu reached the wall and the wizards were called to hold it back, the party went to Narahm. They were able to free him and Gáe Bulg was returned to him. He thanked the party and told them to move away swiftly. He transformed into the Great Leviathan and the party saw his giant black tentacles reach up and tear down the lighthouse. The party quickly regrouped to flee, taking Mimsey with them.
As they left, they saw one of the Leviathan's tentacles reach up and grasp one of the kudzu vines, holding one another after being apart, then the pair smashing down onto the city.
The Great Leviathan was freed and the party sailed back to Baeddon to return to the guildhall.
