Battle of Kailion Vale

The Battle of Kailion Vale was the final battle of the Two Centuries’ War between the Army of the Crown and the Army of Malgrond, and was the deciding battle for the freedom of Mirydain. David McKay and Ginny Langford led the Army of the Crown to confront the Dark King and on that day, he led a force of over 50,000 against more than 110,000 on the Dark King’s side, while his friend Ginny Langford went to organize the soldiers and help the injured. It was also the largest battle of the Two Centuries’ War, resulting in the death of the Dark King and the decimation of the Army of Malgrond.

Prelude

The Two Centuries' War

Deployment

On May 9th, 1225 M.T, David decided to accept his destiny as the King spoken of in the prophecy, and he led the Army of the Crown; over 50,000 soldiers, to the Vale of Kailion, where they were met by the Dark King and a force of 60,000 Orolks and over 50,000 other creatures. The Dark King sent the first wave of his army into the charge, when they met with David and the bulk of his army, and the battle began.

The Engagement

The two forces slammed into each other and for a while, David and the cavalry continually held the foe back. The fighting came to a stalemate around midday, and David pulled his army back to the pass in the valley. The Dark King was confident that the victory was his, and he led the main force of his army after David and his command. However, archers of Elves, Dwarves, Men, and Centaurs were on the high ground and attacked with a hail of arrows. Then the main force of David’s troops came at them in three groups, the largest from the pass and the other two from the sides. The attackers were thrown into confusion and were forced to defend themselves on each side. Then the Army of Anglor, who had made an alliance with David and Ginny, moved into attack. The Army of Malgrond fought fiercely and several Anglorim knights were killed in the charge, but still the line was held.   In the fight, David felled several foes and gave advice and encouragement to his soldiers, but his doubt came back to him when he saw that the Dark King was petrifying, injuring, and weakening several men with his magic, and Lord Dorin fell at the feet of the Dark King’s chief lieutenant, the Hand of Maldor. But then he watched as a strange soldier fought against the Hand and defeated him. The soldier was later revealed to be the Elf Lilönwy, who had gone to fight as she did not wish to see her lover Elmiras come back dead. Heartened by his friend’s courage, David and his men continued to fight back while Ginny helped get the injured to safety. Then Danlir, Lord Dorin’s son, broke the evil wizard’s staff so he could not use his magic against anyone else. But the Dark King stabbed Danlir with his dagger, which provoked David into running to fight the Dark King himself. David and the Dark King fought together for almost five minutes when both armies heard another battle horn sounded.   Glindor the Wise appeared with the Dark King’s prisoners, who had been freed. The Dark King refused to admit that he had lost and swore to kill David, and they dueled once again until David drove the sword Anrilas through his chest and the Dark King’s withered corpse fell at his feet. The reinforcements came down the passes and trampled the Dark King’s forces until less than 20,000 of them remained. With their master dead and their forces fractured, the Army of Malgrond fled for their lives, and Mirydain was safe.

Outcome

The newly-built kingdom under David and Ginny required some time to rebuild as each of the free lands had suffered considerable strain from the war.

Aftermath

David McKay and Ginny Langford became High King and Queen of Mirydain and peace was established in their kingdom. The creatures who served the Dark King were scattered and were not able to reunite under one banner. David and Ginny battled the foe in later years, essentially forcing the evil creatures of Mirydain to go into hiding.

Historical Significance

Legacy

David and Ginny became famous throughout the land as the heroes who led the free peoples of Mirydain to preserve their freedom. David's duel with the Dark King inspired poems and song, while Ginny's skills in medicine and her defense of the injured earned her the title "Queen Ginevra the Gracious".
