If I were a dragon

If I were a dragon
I would roam the skies
on silent wings.
Not to hunt,
but to protect
all who dwell below.
Maybe a little bit of hunting as well ...

If I were a dragon
I would scorch the land
with fiery breath.
Not to destroy,
but to forge
a better tomorrow.

But scorching some bad guys would be okay

If I were a dragon
I would hoard their dreams,
each fragile hope.
Not out of greed
but out of love
so they won’t despair.
How would that even work?

If I were a dragon
I would guard the stars
way up in the sky.
Not to boast
but to help
guide them trough the dark.
I thought Naudas was responsible for the stars? Or was it Pimedus?

But I’m not a dragon
just a mortal man.
Have no wings
to roam the skies,
no burning fire breath.
I hoard no dreams,
don’t guard the stars.

Though I am not a dragon
there is still a strength in me,
a fire burning deep.
So I still protect, still forge,
still love, still help.
Not with wings and fire
but with all my heart.
A lovely, encouraging ending. I like the attitude.

This poem, composed over a millennium ago, holds a cherished place in Kadalan culture. It reflects the deep-seated belief among the Kadal that they are the creation of Karas, the son of the goddess Cahaya and the dragon Bjarnskvir. This lineage fosters a profound connection to ancient dragons, symbolizing strength and wisdom, and reinforces their cultural identity and traditions. The enduring popularity of the poem underscores its significance in preserving the Kadal's ancestral heritage and the values imparted by their divine and draconic forebears.

I would love to be a Kadal as well. Or even a dragon!

Thank you a lot! Writing a poem, especially in English, was certainly out of my comfort zone.
