Mardaan
The title of Mardaan is one of the highest titles one can retrieve while serving in the imperial armed forces.
It is one of the oldest titles still in active use, and the person receiving the title is in the eyes of the civilian population seen as their protector and is given free meals and lodging when traveling around the empire, either on their own or on missions.
There are currently 7 military commanders who also have the title of Mardaan with Atheena Drake being the most famous Mardaan currently alive. She is the current commander of the 9th Legion and got the title when she leads a detachment of the legion in the defense of Geralt's wall against a larger Clifian force that was trying to force access to a castle along the wall and Atheena Drake lead her force around the enemies flank and attacked the enemy in the rear.
Requirements
There are no real requirements for obtaining the title of Mardaan other than one have to be a citizen of the empire and old enough to serve in the armed forces.
It is typically given to those who show the greatest amount of courage and tactical knowledge on the battlefield.
Appointment
All depending on the situation, it is typically given at the Royal Palace of Dercia but if given during a long campaign it will be given in front of the soldiers by the Emperor.
Duties
One who is given the title of Mardaan is expected to lead the forces of the empire into battle.
Benefits
When given the title of Mardaan the person receiving it will typically be given the lordship over a town and or castle.
The person given the title will also be given a large sum of gold.
Cultural Significance
The title of Mardaan is one of the highest titles possible to be given to a military person and elevates the owner on the social ladder.
