Military Clone Template 2340
Military Clone Template 2340 (MCT2340) is the standard cloning pattern in use by the Commonwealth Colonial Marines. It was developed by Samir Genetic Fabrications in the mid 24th century to replace the previous MCT2315. The template represents the latest advancements in the Commonwealth cloning program and quickly became a military as well as commercial success. As of 2357 CE, MCT2340 has produced a majority of clone variants in the Commonwealth’s inventory and has seen service in numerous foreign and domestic military operations. It has also become a focal point in the continued galaxy-wide debate on clone rights, with heavy criticism leveled against it by activists within the United Nations of Earth.
MCT2340 is a refinement of Samir's previous designs in its clone series. While the donor for the template is classified, the base MCT2340 template is a Human male standing at a height of 1.8 metres. Modifications during the growth of a clone guarantee a standardization that applies desired physical and psychological attributes to it. In the case of MCT2340, this includes genetic tailoring for additional muscle mass, enhanced stamina, and a number of other improvements. Thanks to improved genetic engineering technology, MCT2340 is the first mass-produced clone template by Samir Genetic Fabrications that includes proprietary custom organs suited for the stress of battlefield conditions. MCT2340 clones have neural pathways related to loyalty and duty strengthened, which is enhanced by strong conditioning during and after the growth phase. Importantly, the clone's ability to improvise and adapt when need be to situations is preserved, even as personality and individuality are suppressed via a variety of methods. Despite the sophistication of this process, the large scale of clone orders and Samir Genetic Fabrications’ experience means costs in time and money are minimal, allowing for large scale mass production.
The result is a unit with the physical features perfectly suited for combat; and a psychological profile that balances loyalty to superiors and dedication to objectives with the creative thinking of an organic soldier. As part of the growth process, a genetic pattern is assigned to each clone. Due to the nature of the Colonial Marines, these are primarily infantrymen, vehicle drivers, engineers, and medics. Patterns are given modifications depending on the environment their unit is expected to be operating in. For example, those operating in space have their bone structures tweaked to cope better with zero-g environments. A number of variants have been created from MCT2340, including a line of highly-successful clone commandos. Despite this, the template remains unsuitable for higher rank officer positions, due to the requirements for assertiveness and independent decision making.
Military clones are classified as military property and are not eligible for Commonwealth citizenship nor rights afforded to sapient beings. Despite this, MCT2340 units are equipped in line with other organic troops depending on the pattern or variant, though with insignia clearly denoting their status. This leverages their human biology and physical characteristics, making them easily fit into existing supply chains. The physical strain of the genetic modifications mean the expected operating period of the clones is around ten years before expiry, though combat capability does not degrade during this period in a significant manner. Due to this, most clones are stored in stasis when not in active service.
The introduction of Military Clone Template 2340 into service continued the Commonwealth armed forces trend of updating its stocks of clone templates in twenty-five year intervals. The modifications introduced by Samir to the template were met by clear approval from the Admiralty, who noted the increased capabilities of the new clone units in combat situations, especially those lasting for extended periods of time. This, coupled with the relatively low price tag (both up-front and ongoing), means that MCT2340 has continued the tradition of older Samir clone templates in making up a significant portion of the Commonwealth's military force. It has also found service outside of the Colonial Marines in various Admiralty approved military contractors, as well as a limited role as private security for select individuals. Despite this, the cumulative stress of the added enhancements have led to reported cases of “shock awareness”, short periods of erratic behaviour that negatively affect the clones performance. While rare, such cases are quickly dealt with, with either corrective conditioning or disposal of defective units.
