The black sheep of the children of Maelon and Ashara. Maelyra's free spirited antics were a poor fit for the Ancient Valyr family that has long since hoarded power and influence in the shadows. Even physically, unlike her siblings that took features from both their parents, Maelyra's features were mostly inherited from her Mother's Westerosi heritage. Maelyra took no interest in the doctrine of the Valyr family or any of the education paths they had to offer. She ended up being forced to take an unorthodox basic general education from her parents directly. This taught her much about the world, which created a desire to explore, while keeping her mostly clear from familial responsibilities. Perhaps this coddling is what allowed the Doom to affect her more heavily than the others of her family. Every night after the doom brought her nightmares of that day, the mere sight of flame could bring her to fear induced hysterics. She couldn't accept that her family wanted to stay near that hell and build a new Volantis, new Valyria or whatever else. Maelyra only felt the urge to flee. As far as she could. After many failed attempts to convince her family, she decided to flee alone. After a final confrontation with her Mother, she was given funds to secure her journey and a crash course of things to avoid from her worried mother, all of which she had long since been taught. The only thing she kept with her was her family pendant that identified her as a Valyr to those knowledgeable of Volantene High society. She spent the next years traveling, but still haunted. To take her mind off of her trauma and embrace the thrill of life like every day was her last, she took up thievery. Visiting many different courts and cities in disguise and stealing their most valued possessions, leaving only a calling card of an origami Hummingbird. The thrill of these acts were like an addiction that allowed her to temporarily forget the nightmares.
