About Masters of Illuria

I could use the World Meta as provided by World Anvil, but to quote a very good movie, “There is too much, let me sum up…

Master of Illuria is perhaps the oldest world I’ve been worldbuilding in, with Tales of Justice being a close second. The setting is near and dear to my heart. A spark of inspiration was lit through a strategy game created by Steve Fawkner for Strategic Studies Group called “Warlords” published way back in 1990. Combine that with being a fan of Masters of the Universe and other “Future Fantasy” or “Science Fantasy”, the rest just grew out from there.

Starting off with 2nd Edition D&D (Yes, including Spelljammer and worn out copies of Star Frontiers and “Expedition to the Barrier Peaks” module), the world grew. The rest can be called “Future History”!

To be a bit more formal, Masters of Illuria a Post Apocalyptic Science Fantasy with a “superheroic” flavor. It’s the “7th age” of this setting. Here humans, elves, dwarves, animal-people and others co-exist for better (or worse). There’s plenty of fantasy with sword and sorcery but also the occasional super-science of blasters, force screen belts, power armor, and medi-glove scanners.

Technology fused and powered with ancient magics are still being rediscovered, as are lost cities and even entire worlds! The history is rich, the dangers are plentiful.

Inspirations. There are plenty. This "world" I've been working on for so long could be called a fan-fiction love letter to the "Future Fantasy" / "Science Fantasy" genre. Some inspirations may be obscure, while others may be much more well known. These would be the major source of my inspiration.

  • Masters of the Universe (many cartoon series runs and movie)
  • Star Man's Son, 2250 A.D. by Andre Norton
  • Star Frontiers RPG setting
  • Spelljammer setting by Wizards of the Coast (at the time TSR)

  • John Carter of Mars (Barsoom series) by Edgar Rice Burrows
  • Hothouse by Brian Aldiss
  • Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey
  • Thundarr the Barbarian
  • The Mummy movies (with Brandon Frasier)
  • Indiana Jones movies and books
  • Assassin's Creed game series

    Concerning a World...

I was asked, just what is it about Masters of Illuria... or just "Illuria" as I think of it... that brings me back? Gaming campaigns, even worlds, have their "book closed" sometimes. Sometimes the gaming group breaks up, other times the campaign reaches an end. Maybe its a set of books and... you run out of story to tell. I've "closed the campaign book" on Illuria many times.

    Yet, here I am.

It isn't the only world I return to. There are a few others. It's just that Illuria is the oldest one. Why do I come back? I think its because to me, Illuria feels alive. It's not a single concept. It grows, it breaths, it evolves. Every time I return, I find something new waiting for me. It's like Illuria is telling me, "welcome back, look what I found for you!"

    That always makes me smile.

So, in looking at the list of articles here, just remember that there are hundreds of written and typed pages yet to transcribe. That doesn't even begin to account for what's yet to come.

So, that's the meta, the inspiration for Masters of Illuria... for Illuria... and its soul and life's blood.
