Kruslav

Kruslav is the town in which the party will be stationed in between delves into the mausoleum. After days of minor earthquakes, a nearby mountain began intermittently emitting clouds of ash and noxious gas. Terrified by the realisation of Karoch Vol's final prophecy, the town contracted the Guild of Merchants, Militiamen, and Horseworkers to sponsor a band of adventurers to explore Vol's crypt and save the city.

Government

The city and its surrounding hamlets and homesteads are run by Lady Lekalova, under Count Estatle, within the state of Sinsyroxoa. Lekalova's tower is in the centre of town, from which she rules with her cabinet of advisers.

Infrastructure

The two largest residential districts of Kruslav are Novada Village and Malpais Hills. Most of the city's non-aristocratic residents live in Novada Village, which occupies the southwest of the city. Malpais Hills, in the southeast, has a reputation for being seedy and dangerous at night. It houses a gaming den which undergoes regular raids from the City Watch.   There is a large Horsing Arena in the east which holds weekly horsing tournaments, an enormously popular event for casual spectators and seasoned gamblers alike.   The Great Library holds tomes and scrolls dating back centuries, although most of its more precious collections are held in a secured vault. The librarians and curators vigilantly maintain the high standards of organisation expected from the esteemed place of learning.   The Artisanal District houses many of the town's shops, smiths, and crafters. It also has rentable workshops owned by the Incorporated Trades of Kruslav that non-guild members can use to make their own goods. Especially skillful layworkers may be scouted by guild members.   The Moneylender's Institute, located next to the Adventurer's Hall, is the largest bank in town. It handles the finances of much of the town's bourgeois and aristocratic residents in secure deposits. It also lends money to the desperate and safekeeps goods for its clientele.

Guilds and Factions

The city is home to three major guilds: The Guild of Merchants, Militiamen, and Horseworkers; the Incorporated Trades of Kruslav; and the Arcanist, Alchemist, and Scholar's Trade House.   The MMH is a trans-principality guild which registers travelling merchants, adventurers, bodyguards, hirelings, henchmen, and other workers likely to travel into the dangerous lands beyond the city. Their headquarters in the city is the Adventurer's Hall in the north of town, which houses the Great Hall, a chaplaincy, and an Undercroft which serves as a hostel for travellers and an almshouse for the poorly. Apprentices are required to dorm in the Undercroft for the duration of their apprenticeship.   The ITK covers the artisans, crafters, and other tradesworkers in the city. The Artisanal District in the west of town has several workshop spaces that can be rented out for personal use.   The AASTH incorporates the herbalists, librarians, scribes, and mages who reside within the city. Their headquarters is in the Great Library of Vol, near the centre of town, patroned a century ago by Karoch Vol himself.

History

Kruslav was consolidated from several small farming villages around 700 AS following a population boom after the area was found to be rich in precious stones and crystals.   The town was saved from ruin several times by the soothsayer Karoch Vol. He became a local hero and legend after his advice saved the town from famine, drought, wild beasts, and other threats. He accumulated wealth and glory, and used it to patronise the growth of Kruslav, including the Great Library that still bears his name. His final prophecy warned the citizens of a coming threat, harbinged by the disturbance of a local volcano.

Geography

Kruslav is located on the frontier of the Hisberian Plains, onlooking the vast badlands to the east. A mile or so to the north is the River Varta, from which the city draws its water supply.
