Haine

Haine Lanvie’s Daughter (a.k.a. Queen of Frost, Heraldess of Sleep)

The Goddess of Winter

Divine Domains

She is associated with the Dream Domain.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

She communicates with her followers using runes mostly. The rune of winter is tied to her, and can be a way to invoke her. She also has the symbols of moonstones, which are often associated with her husband, but also tormaline.

Holidays

Her sacred holiday is Yule, where people give her offerings and drink melted icewater, as well as retelling the story of her banishment and exile. The Hainulay is a song which recounts this and is typically sung on Yule. The second song, Unduë, is a prayer to take pity on mortals and a blessing that she make the journey to her husband in peace and good will. Fathers then crown their daughters with wintergreens, and everyone rises for a dance. Typically, everyone wears white or gray, but this is not usually observed anymore. All the women line up hand in hand, and the men opposite them, and the dance begins. It involves a great deal of spinning, and has a lively beat, for the music itself is a spell to wake up the earth to their footsteps and warm the blood of the dancers so they can shake away their sorrow and toil. The dance goes on for a long time, and the couple that is still dancing by the end will have luck in love and life for coming year. The dance is known to have the effect of causing dizziness, disorientation, euphoria, and even increased sex drive for the couple. If the dance was successful, the woman may choose to remove her crown and give it to her partner, indicating that she would like to share a night with him. Thoughout the whole night, there is usually a great amount of drinking and eating which can cause altered states of awareness. Before going to bed, everyone hangs some wintergreens above their bed and expect good dreams. To wake up during the night is a sign of disrespect to Haine and Morjen.

Personal history

When Lanvie was a guest in the sun palace, he had affair with the Queen, Alara, goddess of fortune. She bore him a daughter, but her husband beleived it to be his. Aja loved his child, and named her as the heir to the sky. She was the princess of light. But because of his dealings with Evanore, Lanvie was cast out forever, and in an attempt to hurt Aja, he revealed that he was the father of his daughter. Aja was furious, and banished Haine was well, disowning her and banishing her from the skies. She wandered weak and bitter. But then, one day, she came upon a river, where a group of gods feasted and made merry. However, as they ate, the sky grew overcast, and sun did not shine. Something had made her father fall asleep, and without the light, she found she had a strange power. Frost grew where she walked and she froze the river where it was, the wind eager to obey her commands. With ice and night, she created a race of winter spirits. Eventually the sun woke again, and spring spread across the world, but every winter she would always return. She wanted to find the being that had brought all this about, and so she built a temple for them made from cold and stone. She placed it far in the north on a high mountain peak, however, she was overcome with weariness before she'd finished, and fell into a slumber on the mountainside. There, Morjen found her. He told her that it was he who had eclipsed Aja, and that he was the king of dreams. She apologized for having faulted during her labor, and he told her that she need only reach him by falling asleep, and he had no use for material things. Then, he took her to his kingdom of sleep. When she awoke, it was autumn, time for her to be free again, but rather than trying to roam for eternity, she craved to return to sleep, so when spring came, rather than resisting it, she went to the temple lay her body down. Morjen found her there, and took her once again to sleep. Her told her he thought her beautiful, and wanted her to be his Queen. She accepted, but only on the condition that she must leave him every winter to roam the earth, but would return in the spring. He granted her that, and they were wed. They bore a son together, Aimas, who when he had the strength, rode with his mother as the north wind, speaking truth to mortals and carrying winter on his back. They had two daughters also, Agea, the muse of inspiration, who followed her father through dreams to fill the minds of men with desires to create beauty, and Niss, the goddess of fear, who loved to roam both the mind and the earth.

Morality & Philosophy

Haine can be ruthless to those that disrespect her. Besides that, she and her husband usually act as one, so they will often enact vengence for each other. Unlike Hett, she can hear the prayers of mortals, and work with them if she chooses. Mostly, it is advised that one steer clear of her.

Taboos

Haine likes offerings made in her name, and is partial to offerings of food and drink. It is said if one does not honor at Yule, she will ensure they starve before snowmelt.

Reign

Haine is the Queen of Winter, and the Queen of Sleep.
