Kerden province

Kerden is a province of the Sura Empire on Victellus. It's capital is the city of Komba. The province was once the homeland of the ancestors of the Armorta, and was conquered by the Askear Empire in the 6th century RC. Those who did not leave as refugees to found the great marsh cities of the Armorta became the Kerdeni people, who still populate the province.

History

Kerden was settled by early inhabitants of Victellus. It was known as Cerden, Kurden and Kerdin in ancient writings. It's people were primarily agrarian, and the province is not rich in resources. It's relatively dry climate did not lend itself easily to human habitation. The early Kerdeni people (Proto-Kerdeni) settled in the area, the lack of arable land substituted with fishing and the careful harvesting of the nuts of the indigenous Wemili tree.   The Proto-Kerdeni were largely uneffected by the Iron Bubble collapse of the Intermediate Period. They had settled in a number of smaller city-states by the 7th century RC, and were subsequently conquered by the Askear Empire in the 6th Century. They continued under Askear rule as a semi-autonomous province until the 1st Century, when the empire dissolved due to internal disputes, and they established the Republic of the Kerden.   This state, a confederation of city states in trading and defence relationships, continued until 1524 YSB when the Sura Empire subjugated the Kerden in a largely bloodless war. The Republic surrendered after a month after Sura declared war, when the Suran army was sighted on approach to Komba.   The Kerden provide little in the way of taxation or strategic resources to the empire, and their relative unimportance and agreeable nature has left them relatively unchanged by centuries of Suran rule. The province's people maintain traditional architecture, art and even religion. Suran-style dress has been popularly adopted in recent centuries, but in many ways Kerden is an world apart in the middle of the empire.

Structure

Under Suran rule, the Kerden have enjoyed largely autonomous self-rule internally, notable even among the provinces of Victellus who are often offended such rights. The provincial governor is traditionally the Reisha of Komba, the hereditary lord of the capital city - a title still held by the native Kerdeni Ishe dynasty.
