Lazar' Andreevich
Lazar' is a magistrate in Liutovitsa, employed by *Voevoda Vasyl' Mikhailovych. Ivan solicited him for employment as a scribe, and was provisionally taken on (before he fled town in the wake of a riot). Lazar' has employed Ivan as a recorded of the verdicts he has rendered. And important part of the job was making sure Lazar' looked good as an executor of justice.
Lazar' thinks Ivan is not fast enough to act as a court clerk, but he seems to respect Ivan's skills enough to recommend him for more intellectual work (or so he has promised). He was impressed with Ivan's knowledge of the Irii tongue, though he also evinced his provincial character by wondering aloud if Ivan was a spy in the employ of foreigners.
