Jonathan Crenshaw

Jonathan Marcus Crenshaw

Jonathan Crenshaw (born 'Jonathan Marcus Crenshaw''', August 8th, 2240) is a Terstener musician, activist, songwriter, and former freedom fighter, who is considered one of the most significant figures in Tersten country music. His music, including songs such as "Freedom Is Worth Dying For", has inspired several generations both politically and musically.   Born to Rick and Rachel Crenshaw in Nevada, Tersten. His father was a penal prisoner, and his mother a protester who moved to the newly created city of Nevada in solidarity. Following his father's release, the family moved to Lawless in 2253, where the settled and established the Crenshaw Ranch. As a young man, Crenshaw witnessed numerous acts of violence under the People's Republic of Lordania occupation of Tersten, and was inspired to join the Nevadan Resistance. As a young revolutionary, he began performing and writing music to entertain the resistance troops, becoming a close friend of Ronald Mayweather. During the Lordanian Revolution, Crenshaw was a civilian commander in the partisans of the Tersten Government-in-Exile and took part in much of the fighting, though away from much of the most serious of combat zones due to his popularity with the troops.   After the war, Crenshaw remained active in the music scene, where he achieved critical success with the 2282 album 'War Songs', a musical account of his experience soldiering during the Lordanian Revolution. Much of his celebrated work dates from the mid-80s when his songs chronicling the fight against fascism and the social unrest of his time, found him fame beyond Tersten as it became a part of the United Nations of Sol-Aligned Systems. After a brief stint with popular music in the early 2290s, he returned back to his outlaw country roots with the controversial and commercially successful “Thing’s Don’t Change” in 2294, becoming the figurehead of the Tersten anti-war movement. He was a major critic of Tersten's participation in the Gaia Conflict, and became a public anarchist figure. During the late 90s and early 00s, Crenshaw has continued touring extensively.   He is one of the main figures behind Liberation Country, a genre that developed from songs of labour and hardship from the penal era. It is considered a sub-genre of the wider Outlaw Country scene, something extremely popular across the planet. Crenshaw has co-authored several books, and known for generous donations to grassroots political activists and anti-fascist organisations.

Personal history

Crenshaw was born in 2240 in Nevada, Tersten. His father was a prisoner of Harelstone Prison, and his mother lived in Nevada. While imprisoned in Harelstone, his father became friends with Jonathan Tersten, who facilitated his release. When his father returned, the family migrated to Lawless, where he was raised on a Rancher Commune. Few census surveys were conducted in the region prior to the 24th century, and Crenshaw has remained typically tight lipped on his early years.   What is known is that after the death of his father in 2259, Crenshaw left the commune in search of better prospects. Ending up in Nashville, at the far edge of the Lawless Frontier, he fell in with a group of musicians, forming his first band, the Travellin' Blues Band, along with Mikey Leo and Keith Kingsley. Despite finding initial early success, the band was forced into early retirement as in 2260, the Unitarian Party took control of the First Lordanian Republic and Tersten with it. Much of his time during the early years of the People's Republic was spent drifting across the planet, avoiding the eyes of the authority. The members of his first band were largely forced into hiding over the next few years, with little activity from any of them.   He emerged as part of the newly formed Nevadan Resistance, one of many local cells in the days prior to the unification of the Tersten Resistance. Despite being involved in partisan actions, he still took the time to record some material in this time, much of it hard to find and extremely rare. During this period in the late 60s, he met his wife Cassandra Crenshaw, who was serving as notable partisan in the region. The two immediately became close, and travelled to White Ocean City, where Crenshaw met Ronald Mayweather in 2272. Now part of a growing planetary resistance, Crenshaw soon found himself becoming the musical voice of the movement, whose tapes and recordings of protest songs, love songs, and patriotic Tersten songs proved extremely popular with the people, despite the PRL's attempts to ban it. Crenshaw claims to have entertained Commander of The Brotherhood, Louis Poincaré during this time, having performed just prior to the meeting that would lead to the establishment of the Tersten Government-in-Exile.
