"Chasing The Tail" Report

General Summary

After the fight between Sul and Chalice, it’s no wonder when Durg, Sul’s dwarven form, is the one to come downstairs the next day. He immediately begins drinking.   Chalice, after a somewhat uncomfortable silence, suggests that they revisit the grave yard to appease the ghost that they disturbed. However, before he can even finish speaking, Caelum abruptly announces he’s leaving the group. He says that he was here to learn how to work as part of a team before long term joining the order, and, well, he has. And he’s heading home to continue his work. The group bids him a farewell, and Caelum leaves, heading back to Vespmar.   As he leaves, Chalice again insists that they should go back to the gravesite. Durg sneers, deriding the possibility of a curse upon the group. When Chalice continues to persist, Durg stops drinking and looks Chalice right in the eye.   “What do you know about curses?” He scoffs. Unbeknownst to Chalice, this was an attempt by the witch to curse the automaton, but it fails.   Instead, Durg turns to a nearby spoon and, using mage hand, makes the spoon float. This fools much of the party and Liam, worried that Chromalour is now affected by this curse, insists on returning the stone taken from the gravestone to where it originally was.   Durg refuses to come along, but at the gravesite the rest of the group begin to debate praying to Darmon . Ülex, the only Darmonite in the party, explains that worshipping Darmon is not as easy as just saying a few words of adulation – instead, debate and discovery are at the heart of Darmon’s worship. The party reluctantly agrees, and spends a good moment discussing the merits of the saying “do not seek what you do not want.”   It’s not fun for most of the group, not being trained philosophers or Darmonites, and they are even less pleased when Darmon gives no visible sign he saw or heard their worship anyways. The party gives up and Liam and Undilon return to Chromalour to retrieve a gem from Durg.   In the meantime, Durg has managed to steal three bottles of wine from the Galanis family wine cellar:
  • A robust red wine that tastes of ginger and spices, and smells of morning dew
  • A deep red wine that tastes of cloves and pine, and smells of young grapes
  • A rich rose wine that tastes of blueberry and raspberry, and smells of lemongrass
When Liam and Undilon return to find a drunken and surly Durg slumped in a corner, Liam tries to offer a dragon cookie – one of his favorite treats – as a show of solidarity, but when Durg takes it, he crumples it in his hand and lets the crumbs scatter to the ground.   “Treats for children,” he grumbles, stalking away.   This is enough to start a debate between Chalice and Ülex about the merits of keeping Sul in the party, seeing them as becoming more and more contrary to the party’s goals and generally having caused nothing but trouble for them for months.   It is at this time that Liam finally decides to confront his father about the information he’s found regarding the assassinations and executions of the previous royal family, the Chrysos line, the prunings that over the years the Galanis line has “had” to do to keep themselves in power. Iven Rex still sees it as necessary, and begins to become agitated as Liam begins to question it more and more, eventually declaring that Liam could no longer travel with his party and would stay in Paramenthia to continue his training to become the next king.   Liam refuses and, using misty step, slips the guards custody. This marks a turning point for Liam, changing from lawful good to neutral good.   While Liam has defied his father in order to continue traveling with his party, Durg has had enough. He meets with the rest of the group and declares that he’s leaving. That he should have gone with Caelum. But nevertheless, both Vespmarans were now going home. He leaves without waiting for any well wishes.   The rest of the party, feeling somewhat lost, decide to continue chasing the half-elves that had been released from the mirror. Strangely, the two fugitives also seem to be heading towards Vespmar, and the party sets out post-haste to chase them down.   They travel, pushing themselves into a level of exhaustion to try and catch up with the half-elves.   It is at this time when they meet a party of travelers and an Aymaran priest by the name of Deylin Florancan, an aasimar who joins the party with seemingly no prompting – though Deylin, for his part, knows that his goddess Aymara has called him to join this party, just as she moved him to join his last party.   Deylin is a member of the Fair Fellowship of Aymara, and as such lives to create music and joy wherever he may go.   After a few days of travelling together, the party stumble across a portal to the Feywild. It is guarded by two fairies and their mounts, but rather than fight the fairies and close the portal themselves, Liam decides to diplome the shit out of the fairies. There is no bloodshed, but the fairies refuse to close the portal until their scouts return – they also will not tell Liam why they are there, calling it “fey business.”   At first, Liam debates sending Uther, his lion, back with a message for Iven Rex to let him know of the portal, but eventually decides to go back himself. Patch things up with his father. And perhaps meet up with the party at a later time.   It is a sad goodbye, but it is not forever.   The last stragglers of the party make their way towards Brenbrooke  to (hopefully) confront their quarry without delay.
