Kareem and Lama were close friends in school, eventually becoming a couple during high school. Lama was surprised when Kareem proposed to her, asking him in confusion why he would want to marry her because "aren't you gay?" Kareem had never admitted his sexuality to Lama but confirmed her suspicions, explaining that while he might be more sexually interested in men, he badly wanted a family with Lama. She agreed and they were married in June of the following year. They remained beloved companions throughout their lives. Lama pursued a few relationships outside of their marriage but returned to Kareem when she realized that heterosexual romance was less interesting than the steady love she had with her partner and the father of her son. Kareem was always happiest when staying quietly at home with Lama and Dave, later rejoicing in Dave's twins, Amy and Vinnie.

Kareem has always been fond of Amy, ever since she and Vinnie were small. He encouraged them both to be honest with him and kept their secrets diligently.

Kareem recognized Vinnie's discomfort with his assigned gender early in life and always encouraged him to express himself fully when he could. His support and encouragement helped Vinnie survive the darker points of his teen years.

Kareem was always outwardly supportive and encouraging, but when Dave made it clear early in his teen years that he felt homosexuality was disgusting and warped, Kareem withdrew from him and their relationship cooled even further.

Kareem knows where Dave fled to when he left his family. He hasn't bothered sharing the information because he feels Bitch and Vinnie are better off without Dave in their lives.
