When Greta was fifteen, she sneezed at the beach and exploded into what appeared to be a being of pure light. No one was expecting it, least of all Greta herself and she panicked her way out of sight whereupon she immediately called her aunt Ellie. Ellie being familiar with metaphysics and paranormal manifestations, calmed her niece down which helped her dispel the effect.
After several months of training with Ellie and Maddie Brewer, Greta gained full control over this ability, along with its accompanying ability to manifest light from nothing, dowse lights from a distance, absorb all light in an enclosed space and otherwise control light sources. While in light form, she discovered she could also fly, though this became something of a terrifying experience because she remains unable to control the intensity of her flight and has left the Earth's atmosphere by accident in the past.

Gretta was an oops-that-wasn't-menopause baby made even more surprising by the fact that Harold had gotten a vasectomy in 1995 after Zane was born. Lynn wasn't sure she was ready to be a mother again, especially at 41, but Gretta's sunshiny personality made up for a lot.

Greta grew up feeling underfoot with all her older sisters running around. She never felt that way when Aunt Ellie came to visit. Ellie always made sure her youngest niece felt loved and special, eventually leading to a close friendship and Greta's complete and utter trust. Ellie was the first person Greta thought to call when she exploded into her light form for the first time and it was Ellie's network of paranormal contacts which connected Greta to her catalyst mentor, Maddie Brewer.

History

Maddie first got a call about Greta Nelson from her friend, Ellie. Ellie suspected that Greta was a catalyst, since she had recently demonstrated dramatic paranormal abilities, so Ellie agreed to meet with Greta and test her for the specific wavelength of energy which mean the teenager was a catalyst, like Maddie. When she tested positive, Maddie agreed to train Greta to control her abilities and teach her about the supernatural world.
