Personal history
Dex was born Manhattan, KS. His father left when he was eight, leaving him on his own with his mother and younger brother, John. This resulted in next to no normal childhood for Dex, though he and his mother worked hard to keep John’s childhood as normal as possible. After graduation, Dex joined the Marines and served in Vietnam. When he found out that John skipped the end of high school to follow him, he was devastated and struggled a lot with depression and guilt during his service. His PTSD experiences after returning home were severe and he attempted suicide twice, the first time interrupted by his mother and the second by his wife, Mirena.
After buying the salvage yard and building the family home, Dex settles into domestic life awkwardly. He is a distant husband at best, usually preferring to be under a car somewhere than attending to his wife’s ever-increasing emotional needs. But he is an excellent father and once Carolyn is born, he becomes more involved in the maintenance of the marriage.

When Maddie graduated from high school and Dex diagnosed her condition as a catalyst, he and Caroline forged documents offering her an internship under "Doctor Dexter Lockard" in North Dakota. He took her on as a loremaster apprentice and they became incredibly close.

Dex essentially raised John after their father left. He became man of the house and both brother and authority figure for John. John practically worshiped him in middle and high school, inspiring his leaving school to follow Dex to Vietnam.
Commonalities & Shared Interests
Both love to play billards and often argue about who's better (inconclusive). They also enjoy pulling cons and scams together as well as hunting--both the supernatural hunts and the more mundane kinds.
History
Dex and Hamish met at the Bullseye Pool Hall during a spell-swap in 1991, shortly after Hamish had taken up residence there.

Dave considers Dex a territorial rival around the Bullseye. One of their major clashes was over Alley when she first arrived. He also has history with Dex's brother, John Lockard which he takes out on Dex by proxy.
