The Forest of Fires

Graran battle of burning legend.

"Keep it up! Put the wood to that fire!"

Outnumbered...

There are no written records of the battle but the stories live on through the generations. The stories begin with a small band of soldiers, the remains of a larger force, who had managed to escape complete annihilation at the hands of their enemy. These one hundred survivors had no time to rest as the enemy pursued them along the trails through the woods. Tired first from fighting, then from marching through the woods, the troops can't keep up the pace anymore. One soldier suggests surrender and another suggests fighting. The acting commander knows both actions would result in death.

...Not Outmatched

A famous quote in Grara is "There is always another option." These words come from the unnamed commander from the forces in the forest who chose neither option presented by their soldiers. Knowing they had about an hour until the enemy caught up to them, the commander took a gamble and executed what could have been his final gambit.   The survivors began to cut down trees and pile brush to cover the path. Then they lit the blockade - and the surrounding forest - on fire. The flames roared and the heat became unbearable just as the enemy reached the site. The fire spread and the pillar of smoke was seen across most of Breharan. The plan bought the small band the time they needed to escape from the woods and return home.

The Fae of Fire

Much of the story of the Forest of Fires can't be confirmed by present scholars. The one thing that lends credence to the story is the presence of unique fae in the Wildwind Woods. These fae, while each unique, possess a unifying marker - the presence of fire. Some may have fire where their eyes should be, others with a candle-sized flame somewhere on their body, a few with manes of fire, and one story of a being made completely of fire.
