The Dark Condition in Linebound | World Anvil

The Dark

"Day One: I noticed today that Eloren wasn't feeling well. She seemed a bit pale. Well, more than the rest of us trapped under the Floor."   "Day Three: Morale is getting low. The pervasive darkness gets to you. If we don't find an opening soon we will have to fly up through the Floor. Eloren can barely stand now and she mumbled in her sleep."   "Day Four: Some of the crew members seem to have given up. Eloren's condition has gotten much worse. She won't wake up and can barely breathe. The captain says that she won't die. We are going to take our chances in that eternal storm."   "Day Seven: The mast is still broken but the light has lifted spirits. Eloren is getting better slowly."   -Excerpt from the journal of Hassir Garmadi

Causes

The Dark is caused when people are in the unending darkness below the Floor. Long periods of storm above do not have the same effect.

Symptoms

The condition affects people at different rates. Some appear more susceptible than others. Symptoms include depression, lack of energy, and in severe cases a comatose state followed by death. Some people experience nightmares and others hallucinations.

Treatment

The only known cure for the Dark is to return to the light above the Floor. All cases have been fully cured by the light. All cases that were able to navigate back up anyway.

Prognosis

The long-term effects on those that are not susceptible is unknown. No one who has been below the Floor for long has returned.

Prevention

There is no way to prevent the condition aside from never going below the storm.

History

The first recorded case is from 26 of the current era from the crew of the Kielat.

Cultural Reception

People who have suffered the Dark generally suffer no social consequences. In some places they may be thought of as harbouring an evil brought back from The Void.   The condition is featured in a number of works of literature.
