Palathrian Coastline

The Palathrian Coastline is the name given the area which makes up the Palathrian Republic. Discovered in 1430, with colonisation efforts beginning in 1432, it is a lush and rich part of the Unknown Continent.   In the tongue of the native lizardfolk, it is known as Icnoyotl.

Geography

Palathrian Coastline
The Palathrian Coastline is the area held and explored by the Palathrian Republic. For the most part, it is virgin jungle. Half a century of exploration has done little to fundamentally change the landscape of this tropical, hostile region of the New World.   Dotted by a few villages and forts, this new land invites eager adventurers and explorers, hungry for power, knowledge, and wealth.   The region is criss-crossed by massive rivers which at their widest might measure a mile and a half across. These rivers flow eastwards to the sea from the western mountains. These mountaisn are the source of the wealth of the Republic; ardglass, a glowing crystal famed for its magical properties.
The Palathrian coastline is made up of a long stretch of coastline which has been mapped and explored. The coastline has few cliffs, and runs relatively low to the sea with long beaches. In some places, mangroves extend to the edge of the sea.   Palathria is broken up by a large number of tropical rivers, which flow east to the sea. The rivers teem with life, from fish and crabs to snakes and alligators. Nearer to the sea, predators such as sharks and even small whales may come some way up the rivers to hunt and feed. Mangrove trees line many of the rivers, save where colonists have cut back the trees to make rudimentary roads through this savage and untamed wilderness.   Moving in-land, the majority of the region is covered in thick jungle with trees reaching up to several hundred feet in height. The jungle floor is kept in a humid semi-darkness all through the day due to the thick tree canopy.

Fauna & Flora

Flora:   The majority of the Palathrian coast is covered in thick, dense jungle, with trees rising into the sky for hundreds of feet in some places. The jungle is bountiful, and is a source of many plants and fruits - both edible and medicinal.   Fauna:   The jungles of the Palathrian coast are teeming with life, ranging in size from insects through to dinosaurs which roam the jungles and rare plains. These mighty lizards, first mistaken for a new breed of dragons by Tiressean explorers venturing into the jungle, are the dominant predator and roam the waterways as happily as the jungles themselves.   These dinosaurs also rule the skies, with massive pterodactyl creatures swooping and nesting on the long beaches of the coast.   Within the jungles themselves, humanoid tribes have been discovered, named the 'Kuru' after their warcry. These tribes are almost entirely hostile and will mount raids on villages and trade caravans, seeking to carry off victims into the jungle for unknown purpose.   In the west, there are supposed sightings of dragons above the region known for ardglass mining, but these rumours are assumed to be the drunken ramblings of miners looking to show off when they return to the city of Palath's Landing.

Natural Resources

The Palathrian coast produces a significant number of resources, from exotic hardwoods prized in the Old World to spices and fruits transported in magically frozen containers back to Tiressea and Lustenau.   The key resource found in this part of the world is ardglass - a glowing red crystal mined from deep within the western mountains. When separated from the earth it quickly loses its glow, but it is mined for its decorative and magical properties. It is prized by sorcerers, mages, and alchemists across the world for its focusing properties which can increase the potency of a spell or potion many times over.   Due to the extremely hard nature of the ardglass crystal it is incredibly expensive to mine and even an ounce of well-cut ardglass can fetch thousands of gold in the Old World.

History

Discovered in 1430 by Nicoletta Palath, following information from the elves of a rich land to the west, the coast was settled in 1432 with the founding of Palath's Landing.   Explorers have discovered evidence of previous settlement here, with some parts of the jungle holding ancient ruins - stepped pyramids which extend above the jungle canopy. These ruins are viciously defended by the local lizardfolk.

Tourism

Colonists, explorers, and merchants from the Old World are the most common visitors to the Palathrian coast. Elves from Ihse Thalore are also a common sight as they stop to trade, particularly in the powerful ardglass mined in the region.
