Dawnkeeper Order

We have protected the land from the Abyss for nearly two thousand years. If you think I will let some witches destroy all of that just for their own selfish power, then you are sorely mistaken.
— A dawnkeeper

The Dawnkeeper Order is a religious militant organization devoted to protecting the world from the corrupting influence of the Abyss. They are fiercely anti-magic and hunt down witches and demons with equal fervor.

The monastic order operates across Pelatoria. Their public reception generally depends on how a nation perceives witches. To those who distrust magic, the dawnkeepers are heroes who protect everyday people from threats beyond the bounds of this world. To those who value magic, they are dangerous extremists who would kill innocent witches to achieve their goals.

Mythology & Lore

The dawnkeepers revere the Dawnforger as a saint and a slayer of gods. The Whitecliff Monastery, the oldest and most prominent monastery of the order, is said to have been founded on the spot where the ancient hero's final battle against the immortal Archdemons had taken place.

The legendary Spear of the Dawnforger is kept within the mountaintop temple's inner chambers. It is said to have been personally wielded by the Dawnforger, although there is some doubt as to whether it is the real spear or simply a replica.

Divine Origins

The Dawnkeeper order claims to have been personally founded by the Dawnforger nearly two thousand years ago. After the ancient hero defeated the ruling Archdemons and brought an end to their dark Ivory Empire, the Dawnforger founded the Whitecliff Monestery within the Great Pelian Mountains.

For generations, the monks have studied and trained to fight aberrations and demons so that they could carry on their founder's work and protect the world from the Abyss. In the years since, some monks have traveled the world and founded other monasteries abroad with the same mission.

Cosmological Views

We've got sorcerers running all over Jirithkae and we've also got more aberration sightings than any other country on the continent. What if that's not a coincidence? Sure, I think the dawnkeepers could tone it down a bit, but they might have a point about what's causing all these magical disasters.
— A concerned Jirithkaen citizen

The dawnkeepers teach that the Abyss is an dark and unnatural force that was never meant to exist in Leitoria. It was through the pride and ambition of the ancients that the Abyss was born, and it is because of the arrogance of modern witches that it still thrives.

When witches uses magic, they draw power from the Abyss and channel it into the natural world. The dawnkeepers believe that this process weakens the veil between worlds and draws the darkness closer. If witches are allowed to continue pulling magic into Leitoria, the two realms of reality and unreality will collide and world will be twisted beyond repair.

With every spell cast, witches draw the end of the world closer. It is for this reason that the dawnkeepers hunt down human witches just as they hunt down monsters and demons.

The Jirithkaen Sorcerers League

The Dawnkeeper Order and the Jirithkaen Sorcerers League are fiercely opposed to one another.

The Sorcerers League has much more political influence within the empire than the monastic order. However, despite the League's best efforts, the government has refused to ban the religious order in the empire. Both the Dawnkeeper Order and the Sorcerers League are permitted to operate within the nation's borders provided they both follow imperial laws.

The dawnkeepers have very little power in the empire, while the sorcerers need to preserve their upstanding reputation to hold on to their influence in politics. Although neither side can make any significant moves against the other legally, they both are more than willing to drawn their blades and when the eyes of the imperial government look elsewhere.
