Automatons

Automatons are a subtype of the contruct creature type.
"Constructs are made, not born. Some are programmed by their creators to follow a simple set of instructions, while others are imbued with sentience and capable of independent thought. Golems are the iconic constructs. Many creatures native to the outer plane of Mechanus, such as modrons, are constructs shaped from the raw material of the plane by the will of more powerful creatures."
--Monster Manual
Not all constructs are automatons. Automatons are primarilly mechanical in nature and their movement is due to complex machinery. While clockwork gears are a staple of Erdosian automatons, they are not, strictly speaking, clockwork machines; though non-erdosians will often think that to be the case.

Sample Automatons

The Servitor is the most common type, so much so that it's often just called "automaton." It's stat block is identical to the Animated Armor from the Monster Manual.   The Hoplite was an advanced kind of combat automaton that was heavilly in use during the Age of the Varn. During the War of the Varn, it was almost ubiquitous in the armies of that apocalyptic conflict. The first Hoplite was developed by Hoplon Industries. It's stats are that of the Helmed Horror from the MM.   Shield Guardians from the MM are also a classic automaton, but in Erdos they are often encountered in a different variety called Sentinel. The basic difference between sentinels and shield guardians is that the former were not exclusively designed to protect magicians.
