Session 8
This chapter begins with our heroes narrowly escaping the maw of an ogre spider as well as the vengeance of the community that worshipped them. As they collapsed against the walls of the cave, their bodies wracked with fatigue, They rested for but a short time before being assailed by by a group intent on hunting them down and delivering retribution.
As the fight drew on, Liaden O'Legal and Oryim noticed a strange liquid on the tips of their crossbow bolts, this was some form of numbing agent that they managed to avoid succumbing to. The one that seemed to lead the group attempted to escape, casting a spell that enshrouded the battlefield in darkness, a darkness that even Sam Calas could not see through.
Before long the darkness dissipated, with the caster being nowhere in sight. This lead the arty to believe that they would be mustering reinforcements and returning to finish the job. Taking this opportunity, the party mounted up and fled the scene struggling to stay awake after such grueling hours. It didn't take long for our heroes to arrive at a dead-end. However, upon looking around, they noticed that there were large cracks in some of the walls. These cracks were large enough for them to see through to the other side and into a well lit mining shaft.
Using a combination of brute strength and a decent running start, Sam shouldered through the wall which was thin enough to break apart, giving our heroes a path ahead and a means of escape. Walking through the mines, Liaden noticed a slight breeze through the cave and the faint smell of salt, as they emerged from the cave's mouth and were greeted by the night sky above them. From the looks of things they had emerged into a sizable mining operation that was, at this time of night, under heavy surveillance by local guards. These guards were identified by Oryim, who noticed both the uniform and crest of Fatoris. Before long, the guards took note of the people who had emerged from the mine as well as the four horses flanking them. Confused, the guards arrested the party and held them in a nearby outpost. Finally able to rest, the fatigue caught up with our heroes and they had no trouble resting as sleep took them.
Our heroes awoke the following noon, after catching up on much needed sleep. Before they were released however, they were told that they would need to answer a few questions posed by Sergeant Stephen. After the brief interview, they were passed over to a guide whom was appointed to them personally by order of The Mistress, Fatoris's leader and founder. This guide introduced themselves as Kraldort who gave them a rather unenthusiastic tour of the town. The final stop on their tour was the Mitlind Embassy where our heroes were granted a short, week-long, stay. Before departing, Kraldort handed a number of documents to Sam, not the least of which was their court summons, which would have them attend a hearing in 17 days time.
Among the documentation was also a ledger of active and hireable Fatoran lawyers and a pamphlet titled "Beginner's Guide to Fatoran Law." Within the pamphlet were instructions and rules surrounding the Fatoran judicial system, which meant that our heroes were now required to assemble a team of lawyers listed in their ledger. As the party's legal representation to this point, Liaden saw fit to first head to the Law Library to learn all she could about the court system they would soon be embroiled in. While Liaden began to work tirelessly to understand their case and find precedents, clauses and sub laws that may help them with their defence case, Oryim saw fit to sneak up on a dwarven woman who, to him, seemed to be pining over a dwarven man.
After a brief exchange, Oryim resolved to get the two dwarves together (as is the right and priveledge of all travelling adventurers). In order to help him with his endeavor, Oryim approached the dwarven man and asked about him. The dwarf gave his business card, introducing himself as Xaboldend, a junior lawyer who works for his Great-uncle's firm. Though, curiously, he claimed to be willing to take whatever case he could to distance himself from his family. Oryim returned to Liaden sharing both the business card and his personal quest to help the dwarves find love.
In Liaden's mind a plan began to form, though she would need to meet with one of Fatoris's more infamous senior lawyers. After asking around at their firm, the party was directed to the nearby tavern: The Brave Inhibition. Upon arrival there was an old dwarf sloshing ale around loudly proclaiming themselves to be the greatest lawyer in Fatoris. Liaden, curious to test their claim, offered to hire them for their upcoming case, while also issuing a challenge: She and the party would believe and help to prove that he was the best, but only if he agreed to help them while also working with a team comprised entirely of junior lawyers, one of which was his rival's Grand-nephew; Xaboldend.
This dwarf, now identified as Rohakarth, agreed under a set of his own conditions: If the party could ensure that he was named the next Guildmaster of the Fatoran Law Guild, he would take the case regardless of the conditions. Additionally, he requested to meet with the younger dwarf in order to "assess his skill." What followed was an old Dwarven drinking game in which the two participants attempt to both out-drink and out-insult the other without re-using any insults that the other has already said.
For four hours the dwarves drank and slung insults, with other patrons of the bar buying consecutive rounds of drinks for the game as the whole bar watched in awe as the two of them drank. Eventually, the more seasoned lawyer won out as Xaboldend passed out, naming Rohakarth the winner; though he himself collapsed soon after. Oryim woke the two of them up in order to finish their discussion. Xaboldend, though he lost, was complemented for his hearty constitution as well as his wit by the older dwarf as he the two agreed to work together. As our heroes turned in for the night, they were a step closer to having their legal counsel, though now they had to decide on who else to hire...
