RuneWitches
Unknown Origins
The RuneWitches are a group that is as feared as they are respected. This seems to be largely due to the fact that their origins remain a mystery though their powers are very real. Seemingly appearing around the same time as The MagiBlight Plague, the RuneWitches seem to utilize powers connected to the plagues corruption. For this purpose, many fear and desire their power. The most famous of the RuneWitches is named Flavia Spurius, or Flavia the Bloody (pictured above). Flavia is the wife of Cicero, the Craven King and, as a result, queen of Ravessus, The Fallen Empire. Flavia has proven herself a powerful member of the court, revealing and overcoming many threats to her husband's throne and summoning great powers to repel The Blightlords of Ravessus time and again. In recent years, she seems to have made preparation to retake Virolamium. Her greatest act, however, was in the creation of the Shades, Ravessian Guard. So, as can be seen, the power of a RuneWitch is wide-reaching and nearly incomprehensible. Many wish to compare RuneWitches to the well-known hags of the ArborWeald or the Norns of Valklema, The Hyperborean North, some believe that they are agents of The Sorrows. However, their agenda seems to be more united than the hags, more visceral than the Norns, and less religious than the Sorrows.
Alien Magics
From the various studies done by those scholars who could be convinced to interview the RuneWitches, it has been explained that RuneWitch is derived from what they call the "three primal elements." These elements of blood, darkness and light suggest not a simple use of those elements or manipulation of them, but a fundamental connection to the element in question. The RuneWitch that was interviewed regarding these primal elements stated that each RuneWitch selects an "Adherence" of which they become intimately familiar until the primal element becomes a part of their very soul. Adherents of Blood might bathe in blood, drink it, or even wear it like warpaint to become familiar intimately with the element while Adherents of Darkness might isolate themselves in the deepest darkness they can find for great lengths of time or paint themselves black. Adherents of Light are an oddity in that they specify that the light they connect with is "the true light," which has been determined to be Lumite. This deep connection brings with it great risk though. An Adherent of Blood who connects themself intimately to blood, but fails to maintain their identity instead slipping into the element itself, have been known to become any number of strange monstrosities such as blood-sucking undead (vampires), blood oozes, and other similar abominations. Such RuneWitches, seen as having failed their trial, are quickly exterminated.
An Uncertain Agenda
While many write off the RuneWitches as being propagators of the Magiblight Plague, others argue that many RuneWitches have been seen purging The Blighted. However, it remains true that just as many witnesses claim to have seen RuneWitches consorting with the BlightLords and their ilk. While the RuneWitches may not be fully understood, their origin unknown, it is their agenda that must be scrutinized as an alliance to their power might tip the scales in Ravessus.
