Lumite
Nilos slid down the last shallow embankment and came to a stop at the bottom of the gorge. If his sources were correct, this was the location where the white glow had been emanating. Travelers and Merchants knew about finished products, items that were finished and ready to be sold, but Nilos and his small band of scavengers knew Lumite when they heard mention of it. Behind him Corybantes, Krikor and Zanita came to a stop, pressed tightly together within the confines of this small canyon. It wasn't strange to Nilos, knowing that the merchants wouldn't investigate the light, after all, all sorts of monsters lurked within natural burrows such as this.
Nilos drew his gladius and drifted forward on light feet. He didn't need to give any orders, the rest of the scavengers immediately fell into line and drew weapons. The soft stretching sound of cord let Nilos know that Zanita had her bow drawn and ready to fire at the first hostile movement she saw. The group continued onward, pressing further and further into the slotted canyon. The rock walls at either side seemed to hold them in a vice-like grip, as if the whole canyon could squeeze itself together at any moment. No sound could be heard, no movement seen. The hazy light of the stars and moon above shone lazily into the wrinkle in the earth.
Nilos turned again, rounding a corner and stopped. The light brightened just around the next corner, too bright to be the light above and as he began to move towards a shadow flitted across the glow. Nilos stopped in his tracks, whatever it was had been too big to be a small bird and yet not large enough to be a basilisk or other large monstrosity. Nilos looked back at his group, getting nods in return to tell him that they had seen it too. He steadied his breathing, pulled the hoplon shield from his back and set it squarely in front of him, greatly reducing his vision but providing considerable protection. Feet set squarely, he inched forward towards the light.
As he turned the corner, no hostile creature became visible. Nothing reared up and attacked or lunged from a wall, everything was still as if all the breath in the world was being held. Nilos shielded his eyes and saw the source of the light. Ten clusters of White Lumite grew up from a crack in the ground, a small fortune if Nilos had ever seen it, more than he had ever seen. The others behind him began to laugh and clap each other on the back as Nilos leaned forward, pulling a single faceted crystalline metal spire from the ground. It glowed brightly in his hand, brighter than the moon or stars, rivaling even the sun if gazed directly upon. A smile crept across his face. With this they could retire somewhere comfortable, perhaps even in Seidon or Midas.
Suddenly, a screech sounded from above him and the flapping of wings filled his ears. A bird-like creature with grey feathers and a sharp black beak flapped from a ledge above them along with two others. One landed upon Zanita, another upon Corybantes and the last upon Nilos, who only barely managed to raise his shield. Everything became a flurry of motion and screams. Blood sprayed Nilos's face and he briefly managed to see the bird tear a chunk of flesh from Corybantes's shoulder. Zanita made no noise and suddenly, the one that had been upon her came stalking out of the shadows and leaped towards Krikor. Nilos heaved with all of his might, tossing the bird to the side. He turned, lifting the Gladius and met the birds eyes. Suddenly, his body became heavy and sluggish as if it didn't want to respond. Nilos heaved with exertion, trying to move, but nothing worked. He screamed inwardly and heaved again, arm inching forward bit by bit. With a final moan of effort he slammed the gladius through the birds neck, sending up a spray of blood. Nilos turned to the rest of his group who were dispatching the rest of the birds.
Nilos ran to where Zanita had fallen, fearing the worst. As he rounded the corner, a large stone caught his foot sending him sprawling, landing face to face with Zanita's stone figure. Nilos had feared the worst when he had seen the birds, he now knew that they were Cockatrice's. Though the encounter had cost them a friend, the rest would be rich. Harvesting would need to be done before the Cockatrice's had a chance to reform and return to their nests, hopefully they would have several days to harvest.
Manufacturing process
Lumite must be crushed and refined, once this is done it becomes Lumina. Lumina is a component necessary in enchanting Glyphings, or glyphs of power. Multiple glyphs together form a sequence, which, when combined with other items containing sequences become constructs. A construct is an item that has been enchanted with lumina and tested, meaning all of its disparate pieces manage to work and function together. This process is complicated and takes time and practice, along with mastery and memorization of all known glyphs, to create functional constructs. A construct is similar in concept to magically enchanted items, though it functions by use of glyphs rather than imbued magical properties.
Significance
Technological component, used to create most magitech constructs.
