Bathsheba (Bett) Booker is now in her early 60s. Bett retired when Gabe Booker did, after being personal secretary to Sedge Hathorne's mother for many years. Bett emigrated from London shortly after graduating secondary school. Her background, though mysterious, is a bit posh, and her accent and pleasant manner immediately won over Mrs. Hathorne, who hired her on the spot. That’s how she met Gabe Booker. She drove Mrs. H to a work site and hung around watching Gabe work while Mrs. H fussed at her husband about something. It was a very long fuss, and by the time it was over, Bett had Gabe’s number. “You might as well go out with me now,” she said. “If we don’t have fun, we haven’t lost a thing.” Two years later, they were married by a justice of the peace following a Springsteen concert in Asbury Park, NJ.
In addition to her secretarial duties, Bett was the default caregiver for young Sedge Hathorne from the time he was quite young. She often took him bowling, along with Eustacia and Tamsin. Bett is very bright, but got bored sitting in class at the local community college. She dropped out and proceeded to work her way through all the Great Courses cassette tapes, listening while she whipped up infamous meals that inspired both her daughters to become pretty good cooks in self-defense. She does make outstanding rhubarb crunch, though.
Last year Gabe and Bett purchased a brand-new state-of-the-art recreational vehicle, sold Eustacia and Tamsin their house in New Pembroke for $1 apiece, and took off on a tour of US and Canadian national parks.
