The Spellster Tower

The spellster tower in Demarn is an architectural marvel. The central tower was built back when Ancient Domian ruled pockets of land across the continent, making it several thousand years old as well as one of Demarn's widest and tallest structures. But what many Demarners consider as a single building is actually a central structure ringed by a thick wall that doubles as housing for a populace large enough to rival any small city.   The tower itself houses close to 1000 spellsters of every age as well as their individual guardians. Originally built as a citadel intended to house around 2000 people, the tower itself is made of a stone that can absorb large quantities of destructive magic which, when the Kingdom of Demarn wrested control of its lands back from Ancient Domian, saw as a perfect place to confine their spellster population. It was then that the outer walls were built, with the intention of keeping spellsters in rather than others out.   The only publicly known entrance to the tower requires passing through two gates. The front gate is naturally the larger of the two. It is heavily fortified on both sides and under constant guard. This gate grants entrance to a self-contained courtyard where supplies are offloaded. The second set of gates opens into the central courtyard where people can go to the tower, the garden or the outside training arenas. At no time are both gates allowed to be open.   The gardens consist of herbs and vegetables, but there are a few flower plots (mostly medicinal). A few sheds have been built into the inner curve of the wall and a substantial hothouse sits not far from them. A well, dug after the outer wall was put in place, helps keep all the plant life watered. All the food needed to feed the populace comes from external farms, such as the massive buckwheat fields near Whitemeadow.

Design

Within the tower, the ground level houses the massive duelling arena, the lower level of the library is here, too, as are multiple other rooms used for more personal studies. The next level up is the public area. This consists of two bathing chambers, the infirmary, the second level of the library and several dining halls.   Higher up are more private quarters, with multiple levels devoted to spellsters over the age of fifteen. The levels above that is where the children and most of the guardians live. There is also a school where the kids learn basic academics. This room, along with the guardian quarters, take up much of the middle, segregating the children. The nursery resides at the very top, where the newly-made guardians and nursemaids live.   Entrances to various dungeons and basement areas are dotted about the ground level with the most commonly used being alchemist's quarters. Here, spellsters with low magic abilities test infitialis and create magic-nullifying collars. The walls here are thick, enough to absorb a few blasts without much damage.   There are also a few chambers for the purpose of placing unruly spellsters in solitary confinement. These cells are lined with a thin sheet of infitialis to prevent any magic-induced injuries. Another, less well-known, dungeon is reserved for guardians who overstep or disregard their duties.
