Henri I

King Henri I

Jacques-Victor Henri Christophe was the King of Haiti following the death of his father-in-law, Jean-Pierre Boyer. As Boyer had no sons of his own, he married his daughter, Azema, to Christophe. Christophe was the surviving son of Boyer's rival who had been exiled after the War of the Grasses. Marrying the two was seen as a way to bring the two houses together and end the rivalry. Christophe established the House of Christophe as one of his first acts as monarch. During his short reign, he continued Jean's policy of accepting freed American slaves to the island.
