Azema Boyer-Christophe
Queen Marie
Jeanne Françoise Victoire Azéma Boyer-Christophe was the daughter of King Jean I and wife of King Henri I. Being the only daughter of Jean-Pierre Boyer through his wife, Marie-Madeleine Lachenais, Jean faced a dilemma as women were barred by the Haitian throne. Her marriage to Henri Christophe was arranged in order to pacify much of the resistance to Jean's reign.
Just like her mother, Queen Azema became a vocal advisor to Henri. During the reign of her son, Henri II, she helped convince the Haitian military to support the Cuban War for Independence against Spain.
