Henri II

King Henri II

Henri Christophe II was King of Haiti upon the death and short reign of his father, Henri I. During his reign, he took advantage of the turmoil in France to suspend reparation payments and to annex Martinique and Guadeloupe. Later on, he assists the slave rebellion in French Guyana to take control, only to later sell the territory to the Empire of Brazil. With the purchase, he used the finances to invest in Haiti's naval power.

Under his reign, Haiti supported Cuba in its war against Spain, capturing and annexing the island of Puerto Rico. He did this secretly, as the American Great Powers argued over Cuba. Following this, he became unofficially known as the Emperor of the Caribbean. He declined to reorganize the kingdom in such a manner however. While the annexation increased the Spanish speaking population of the Haitian Kingdom, he declared French and Spanish to be joint official national languages.
