Hellhounds Species in Kingdom Earth | World Anvil

Hellhounds

Hellhounds came into being when the nine Archangels chose to reproduce with several female werewolves. They did this often enough over the span of a hundred years that a large population was established early on, and as the original generation grew up to realize they were different from their werewolf families, they formed their own communities. When it became clear that the werewolf-Archangel offspring did not acquire any angelic power from their fathers, the Archangels chose not to father more of them. However, hellhounds are able to choose when they change forms, unlike their werewolf ancestors.

Where the term "hellhounds" is not known, but may come from early hellhounds claiming to be demons who belonged in Hell.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Hellhounds, much like werewolves, have two forms. The first is the hound form. In this form, hellhounds appear to be large, heavily muscled dogs. In the second form, the human form, they appear to be heavily muscled humans. They also have pointed ears and larger jaws with larger teeth, but these traits can be hidden with glamour spells cast on the individual or taken by pill or potion.

Genetics and Reproduction

Hellhounds reproduce like other mammal species, though females are pregnant for ten months. Though not as common as with werewolves, hellhounds do frequently give birth to twins. Also unlike werewolves, a hellhound's reproductive cycle isn't tied to the full moon.

Growth Rate & Stages

Young hellhounds grow and mature at the same rate as mortal humans and werewolves, but they are able to begin taking on their hound forms as young as five years old.

Ecology and Habitats

Hellhounds often live in urban areas where they can easily find work. As a species they excel as bodyguards, private security guards, and bouncers at clubs and bars. Some, especially those who prefer to spend most of their time in hound form, choose to live in suburban or rural areas.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Hellhounds require a high-calorie diet. They are also naturally omnivores and cannot survive for long on vegaterian or vegan diets.

Behaviour

Hellhounds are deeply committed to their friends, family, and employers. As long as they are treated with respect, they will remain loyal for life. If anyone threatens those they are loyal to, they will lay down their lives for their defense.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Elders in hellhound culture are treated with respect, but there is no overreaching societal organization. Hellhounds simply fend for themselves in small groups or alone and live by the local rules wherever they are. They keep their identities secret more often than not out of a sense of self-preservation, not out of obligation to protect the larger species.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Hellhounds live in every country on Earth.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Regardless of what form they are in, hellhounds have a better sense of smell, sight, and hearing than the average human.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Some hellhounds happily form relationships with humans and other paranormal or supernatural beings. Others only see other species as a part of the world and not worth being involved with.

Civilization and Culture

Courtship Ideals

There is no true courtship among hellhounds. Relationships often move quickly after meeting, though most hellhounds don't bother to marry unless they are with a human partner who wants it or they are pressured by forces in the human world in which they live and work.

Relationship Ideals

Many hellhounds have long-lasting romantic relationships, but casual sexual relationships are also common. Polyamorous arrangements are also very common among hellhounds across the world. There are no prejudices against same-sex relationships.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Hellhounds usually get along well with other species in general, though some individuals might claim they are "mindless," "stupid," or "just muscle."
