Invasion of Isholn
It was a noble force of 20 companies, in shining armor, banners waving high, versus a ramshackle army of 3 thousand citizens, most of whom didn't have weapons.
The battle was over in 30 minutes flat.
After the merchants of Isholn came out with a donkey cart filled with gold, they offered the expanionist and hungry army of Kearsai a deal - 20 gold per soldier to go home, and a warm meal ready right now.
50 soldiers died in the rush to partake.
The Conflict
Prelude
There had been issues between the two cities for years, as both were competing in similar markets. Eventually Kearsai decided that they might have less wealth, but they had a much better trained army. They had expanded over many of the other smaller cities and towns in the area, but had failed to take a meaty target like Isholn.
Battlefield
The plains between the two cities are large and open.
Outcome
Kearsai retreated back within its borders, though it continued to grow its army. Some say it was preparing for another strike when the gods wiped it away.
Aftermath
Isholn has not been invaded since, though they are no longer quite so united. The Merchants would be unlikely to come together in any fashion to be so successful today, and some people believe they would be easy prey.
Historical Significance
In Literature
The great poet Milpi tried to write a saga of this battle, until he famously shouted "it's useless! No one can make a quick bribe sound inspiring!"
Military history writers tend to include it as a single page note about the old adage that armies march on their stomachs. A paid soldier is a happy soldier. They also note that without Isholn's tactic, their army would have certainly been destroyed.
Technological Advancement
This war took place at the beginning of the ascension of the longbow. However, given the lack of actual combat, it is difficult to know if Kearsai's mastery of the longbow would have made an impact in terms of casualties.
