Thormir Stoneshaper
"I’ve spent my life shaping the earth, now it’s time to shape the sea. The technology we develop here will not only change how we sail but also fuel the advancement of the dwarven people. But make no mistake, it’s a path full of risks. But if we succeed, we’ll ensure that Seastone stands tall among the great civilizations of the world."
— Thormir Stoneshaper, founder of S.O.N.A.R.

Introduction

S.O.N.A.R. (Shipyard of Nautical Academic Research) is the pride of Seastone, embodying the city's innovative and entrepreneurial spirit. This groundbreaking facility is dedicated to advancing the field of shipbuilding and maritime exploration, with a particular focus on the utilization of the city’s abundant pumice stone. Situated near the bustling docks, S.O.N.A.R. is a blend of dwarven engineering and practical design, with workshops, dry docks, and research chambers spread across its premises.

Purpose and Mission

S.O.N.A.R. is the spiritual child of innovator and alchemist Thormir Stoneshaper. The founder of Seastone established this facility to revolutionize naval technology. Its primary mission is to design and develop lighter, more durable ships capable of navigating both the Sea of Syralis and- in the future- the vast, mostly uncharted Oceara Ocean. By incorporating pumice stone into shipbuilding, S.O.N.A.R. aims to reduce the weight of vessels, increase buoyancy, and improve overall performance. In addition to crafting ships, the facility is tasked with researching new methods of maritime travel, including exploring unorthodox propulsion systems and vessel designs.

Projects and Innovation

The researchers at S.O.N.A.R. form a diverse team, drawing from the talents of dwarven engineers, gnomish tinkerers, and human artisans. Dwarven engineers bring their time-honed expertise in craftsmanship and mechanical precision, ensuring that every ship and invention is durable and finely constructed. Gnomish tinkerers contribute their flair for innovation and unorthodox problem-solving, often developing experimental designs that push the boundaries of technology. Meanwhile, human artisans add a practical, hands-on approach to the projects. As a result, S.O.N.A.R. has become a hub of innovation, with several ambitious projects already taking shape, each pushing the boundaries of what is possible in naval engineering and underwater exploration.

By integrating pumice into hull designs, ships gain a unique combination of lightness and durability, making them ideal for both calm seas and turbulent waters. Pumice is shaped and treated to withstand the stresses of long voyages and challenging climates.

Human Collaboration

S.O.N.A.R.’s first significant collaboration with a human came through Varin Arclan. Varin is a former Waveblade of the Thalassographers, an elite group of scholars dedicated to studying the depths and mysteries of the seas. In his younger years, he was known for his expert navigation and daring expeditions on the open sea. However, his career was abruptly cut short when he was expelled from the Thalassographers for stealing treasure from ancient underwater ruins during one of his missions. The scandal ruined his reputation within the scholarly community, but Varin quickly adapted, finding new work as a mercenary offering his expertise in oceanic protection and guidance for ships venturing into dangerous or uncharted waters.

Drawn to Seastone by rumors of ambitious sea expeditions and cutting-edge maritime research, Varin saw an opportunity not only to redeem his status but to secure the wealth and luxury he had always craved. He offered his extensive knowledge of marine geography and deep-sea navigation to the researchers at S.O.N.A.R. in exchange for an opulent lifestyle. While his motivations remain driven by personal gain, Varin's contributions have been invaluable to S.O.N.A.R.'s pioneering projects. His insights into sea currents, submerged ruins, and even mystical sea phenomena have helped shape the direction of their research into submarine technology and deep-water exploration.

Facilities and Infrastructure

The S.O.N.A.R. complex is a marvel of modern engineering, blending dwarven ingenuity with cutting-edge steam-powered technology. Located near Seastone's docks, the facility is a relatively new structure, meticulously maintained to reflect the city's ambitions for maritime dominance.

The building itself is composed of sturdy stone foundations and lightweight pumice-enhanced walls. Its design prioritizes functionality, with wide corridors, high ceilings, and reinforced workshops tailored for large-scale shipbuilding and experimentation.

Technological Features

  1. Illumination Systems: While not fully electric, S.O.N.A.R. utilizes steam-powered arc lights that bathe the interior in a steady, bright glow. These lights are safer and more reliable than oil lamps, a critical improvement in the often volatile research environment.
  2. Automated Lifts: To move heavy materials such as pumice blocks and steel plates, the facility boasts a network of steam-driven lifts and conveyor systems. These mechanisms greatly enhance efficiency in transporting supplies across different areas of the complex.
  3. Steam-Powered Tools: Workshops are outfitted with specialized tools such as steam-driven drills, saws, and hammers, enabling craftsmen to shape and refine materials with unmatched precision and speed.

Key Areas

  1. The Dry Docks: These are the heart of S.O.N.A.R., where prototype ships like the Wavebrave are constructed and tested. The docks are large enough to house two small vessels in various stages of completion, with cranes and pulleys aiding in the assembly process.
  2. Research Chambers: These spaces are dedicated to experimentation and innovation. Here, teams work on propulsion systems, diving suits, and other nautical technologies, often surrounded by schematics and prototype models.
  3. The Observation Tower: A structure equipped with telescopes and mapping tools. It serves as a hub for studying weather patterns, celestial navigation, and oceanic currents.
  4. The Steamworks Core: This central chamber houses the facility’s massive boilers and turbines, which power the entire complex. The rhythmic hum of machinery is a constant reminder of the facility’s technological prowess.

Pipsea Wavetinker

"At SONAR, the sky’s the limit! Well, actually, it's the sea, but you get what I mean! We’re not just building ships; we’re crafting the future. Each blueprint is a spark, a tiny seed that could turn into something incredible. If we can make the ocean bend to our will, well then, there's nothing we can't do!"
— Pipsea Wavetinker, researcher in S.O.N.A.R.

Pipsea is a lively and brilliant gnome engineer whose boundless enthusiasm and inventive genius are the driving forces behind many of S.O.N.A.R.’s groundbreaking designs. With an eye for the unconventional, she brings a creative touch to every project, from experimental structures to cutting-edge diving prototypes. Though small in stature, her ideas and energy make her a towering figure in the facility. Zack Coaststone

A former deck worker on various ships, Zack's maritime knowledge is rooted mostly in hands-on experience. While he carries himself with the bravado and authority of a seasoned captain, it is clear to those who know him that his abilities do not match the title. He boasts of his exploits, but beneath his confident exterior lies a quiet fear of failure, as he knows he lacks the depth of knowledge required to truly lead a ship. Yet, his decision to take the captaincy at S.O.N.A.R. was not driven by ambition, but by necessity, as there were few dwarves experienced in seafaring. Since arriving in Seastone, he has taken on the role out of a deep sense of duty, believing that the dwarven race must advance in maritime exploration for their future. Pipsea, a close friend and confidante, supports him wholeheartedly, bolstering his confidence and helping him navigate the complexities of his role. Though Zack often feels like an imposter, he is determined to give his all, hoping his leadership will help elevate the dwarves' involvement in the seas.

"Aye, SONAR’s where we’ll show the sea what dwarves can do! There’s nae challenge too great if ye’ve got the right crew, and I’ve got the grit to see it through. I’ve sailed through more storms than most ever will. We’ll craft ships that’ll make the waves themselves salute us, ye’ll see!"
— Zack Coaststone, Captain of the Wavebrave
