Iden xira

A confusing case of classification, iden xira are mammalian humanoids that convergently evolved pangolin-like scales. The large scales growing on their heads once made people think they were related to vidas, but both developed their signature plates separately. Beyond that, iden xira were briefly considered to be reptilian humanoids instead, due to their scales, until their origin as hair and similarity to pangolin scales led to them being re-assigned as mammalian humanoids. Their placement is currently under debate, with some arguing that they are similar enough to baseline humans to be considered Near-Human instead, but for now they're still placed under the broader humanoid category.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Iden xira are very human-like in anatomy, with one big exception: their scales. Instead of hair, iden xira have evolved pangolin-like scales from their hair, forming large slightly curving plates. These plates attach to special muscles, which allow for the scales to be raised and lowered (by tensing and untensing the muscle). Aside from their obvious defensive measure, raising the scales can serve as intimidation, but the scales are also used to emote. If the muscles are kept relaxed, an iden xira's scales can also be rattled for noise, which is likewise used to emote (as well as threaten).   Scales are most present on the head and lower arms, but they are also scattered on the back and lower legs. They are also heavily present on their tails, which are long and somewhat muscular, and completely littered with scales, obscuring the underlying shape. The tail scales are the ones most frequently used as noise-makers, the large scales clattering against each other.
