Karazhan
"From the rustic village of Barovich, I could see it. An ancient tower, a thick, massive protrusion of white stone and dark mortar, a man-made eruption that shot effortlessly into the sky, scaling higher than the forest around it, like a beacon in the moonlight..." - Unknown
Purpose / Function
Karazhan was built by the guardian Medivh, a powerful wizard. It was created to be a home and research centre for the eccentric wizard, complete with a giant library and workshop and live-in staff to deal with the mundane everyday chores that a wizard of his calibre disdained. however, its greatest purpose was its location, which allowed Medivh to take advantage of a nexus of ley lines. This allowed Medivh to perform experiments that required raw magical energy.
Architecture
Made from an unknown white stone material and held together with dark mortar. The tower has been created with the idea of spatial awareness with each room being open and wide leading the viewer towards a functionality within the tower. In contrast to a lot of the Gothic architecture in the kingdom, Karazhan stands out as a an over stylised tower built to impress and inspire those who would gaze upon the home of Medivh Guardian of Stormwind.
History
The Tower was built in 396 p.d. by the residents of Old barovich; then just known as barovich. It was designed by Medivh to reach the ley line nexus above it allowing him to tap into the ley lines raw magical energy for his own research. After Medivh moved into the tower and began tapping into the ley lines he noticed strange happenings around the tower where echos of the past and the future would appear before him.
As time went on Medivh focused his research towards the veil between realities, eventually learning of ways to use the tower to enter a different reality by passing through the astral sea and using the vast quantities of magical energy from the ley lines to break down the weakened veil. And when Strahd came to take the tower from Medivh the battle that ensued was so volatile that the tower broke the veil permanently within the walls of the tower.
After Strahd defeated the Guardian Medivh he bound him to the tower and to protect the vast libraries Strahd bound a Shadow Dragon; a beast corrupted by the very essence of death itself. The beast still guards the tower for Strahd who is its current de facto ruler.
