Age of Myth

-2000 > -501

The age of myth refers to the times long since past, of which only fragments and legends remain. Tales handed down from parent to child, stories told by teachers to eager eyed youngsters, and myths passed around a late night campfire. It is a time often spoken of in reverence, for regardless of if the legends are true or not, it was truly a time of grand accomplishments. The age of great kings, of epic battles, and of legendary heroes. It was a time ripe with magic unlike any seen since, and of feats which will forevermore remain unchallenged. It is not known how much of the Age of Myth is hyperbole, accounts which have since been embellished and twisted by the passage of time, and how much is accurate. Due to the fragmented nature of the age of myth there is no solid consensus as to it’s starting time nor what came before it, often known only as the Age of Darkness.

Age of Rebuilding

-500 > -201

The end of the Second Dead War brought with it the full realization of the losses suffered during the Age of Myth. An entire continent had been lost to the undead, millions had died, and those who had survived did so upon a desolate landmass which could not possibly support them for long. Although the Celestial Guardians had been forced to retreat, they had left mankind with new. Weapons which could stand up to the immense powers of the undead hordes. Engines of war which could push back the once innumerable hordes of skeletal warriors. Varin armor protected those brave enough to venture across the shores and reclaim the old continent. Lastian rifles, arcane weapons capable of damaging the undead where employed by elite warriors to cleanse areas once thought lost. Despite the losses, humanity was ready to strike back and fight off the undead, on it’s own terms.

Age of War

-200 > -1

The Age of Rebuilding slowly came to a close around the year 389 as various factions within the old Kastrean empire laid claim to the ancient Fortress-cities which had been left behind during the exodus from the undead hordes during the Age of Myth. Thus forming a myriad of smaller kingdoms which sought independence and self-governance. Numerous wars erupted as city-states banded together and rebelled against the Kastrean Remnant Empire. Although short, the aptly named Age of War resulted in the loss of much of the remaining gifts given to humanity by the Guardians along with a technological regression as many long held secrets to manufacturing and metal-smithing were lost, their texts destroyed to keep them from falling into the hands of rival factions. Even relatively simple steel based weaponry and armor became prized relics, and the people who were able to maintain and repair them were elevated to the status of nobles. Pride was found in hand to hand combat and many ranged weapons were used sparingly if at all, being supplanted by magic or viewed as the tools of weaklings depending on the faction.

A series of devastating undead attacks, coupled with a crop failure impacting both Sonadpul Altribus and Sonadpul Betrus the peasant class of both cities threatened to withdraw support from the recently formed Kastrean Empire.
In response the Kastrean Empire deployed troops to the cities to coerce the regional governors to re-affirm the laws of the empire. While the uprising was only a minor protest by most accounts, the action would quickly garner the title of the First Sonadpul Revolt.

    The Kastarian Schism
    Revolution

The first major war during this time was what would ultimately become known as the Kastarian Schism. Started when the residents of the newly reclaimed capital city of Kastar, along with several surrounding city-states declared themselves as the true descendants of the Kastrean empire and their ruler as the true heir to the throne. Quickly able to rally a small collection of neighboring cities to their aid the newly formed True Kastrean Empire succeeded in pushing back Kastrean forces for nearly 4 years. Through a series of lightning raids and brutal siege warfare they managed to split the much larger Kastrean force into manageable segments. While their string of victories were impressive they were ultimately drawn into a stalemate in 48 BME. Following two years of brutal negotiations the war resumed, with another string of successes for the Kastrian army who, in 46 BME, managed to secure the first of many rights of succession from the Kastrean Empire.

    Revolution

The final, and ultimately successful rebellion was headed by Kadria and Elania Valian, the daughters of the Valian twins, who had seen their cities suffer over the decades and worked together to co-ordinate a successful rebellion. While the rebellion succeeded in driving out the occupying forces, the Kastrean empire was now in a situation where a pair of rogue Communicators were acting in direct defiance to the empire. In fear of what these powerful mages could potentially do to the empire’s communication network the Kastrean empire ordered a full military assault upon the city. Backed by the various Magic Guilds of the empire the Kastrean army marched upon Sonadpul Betrus and, in the intense fighting, leveled the city to the ground, killing Elania and, via their telepathic link, seriously injuring Kadria. Sonadpul Altribus was blockaded and sieged for nearly one and a half decades, however due to its remote location and fortified nature it withstood the siege and as the Kastean empire was roped into more and more was, the city was eventually able to fully separate itself from the empire.

The largest naval conflict ever recorded, sparked by the reformation and subsequent rebellion of the Madrean Alliance, who wished to isolate themselves from what they saw as the impurities of the newly reconquered old continent, and believed that the true spirit of the Kastrean Empire had been corrupted in it’s newer incarnation. The war between the Alliance and the fractured empire resulted in a decisive victory for the Madreans, due in large part to the unique southern coastline of the new continent and the ancient defenses of Portempest. It marked the final blow for the Kastrean remnant, which dissolved a scant 5 years following the Madrean victory.

    The Greenfolk War
    Military: War

The Age of War culminated with the rise of what would eventually become known as the Greenfolk. No one knew from whence they came or how they had spread so far across the world without notice. From the forests and the mountains came swarms of these massive creatures. Armed with crude weapons and cruder tactics they marched across the old world, throwing themselves en-masse at the ancient fortress-cities built during the Age of Myth. While their unexpected first assault succeeded in decimating several smaller kingdoms and sowing fear across the old world, humanity had advanced in the thousand years since the undead hordes had nearly driven them to extinction. While the secrets of the Varian armor and Lastian weapons had long since been lost to time, magic had granted them powers which were lacking during the Age of Rebuilding. Yet despite the powers wielded by the witch covens and royal mages during this era, the innumerable numbers of the attackers once again proved advantageous, and humanity was driven back to sheltering in their fortress cities. During this time the three greatest kingdoms of the age Magtormens, Kastar, and Sonaltrius merged to form the kingdom of Magtarius in an attempt to strike back against the Greenfolk horde, ushering in the Age of Unification.

Age of Ending

317 and beyond

The royal historical academy places the official start of the Age of Ending in 806 during the event known as the Disaster of Adrias, wherein the city of Adrias was annihilated when the local mage council attempted to cast a large scale healing spell on a wounded army. However many scholars believe that the Age of Ending actually began almost 200 years prior to it’s official starting date, between 683 and 700, with the first recorded instances of magical corruption and the first emergence of Spirit Creatures. While magical corruption had been present ever since the Age of Myth and rumors of strange beings being brought forth by spells had were known to date back as far as the Age of War it was not until around the 700s that these events began to increase both in frequency and intensity. It is not certain what exactly caused these events, however many attribute the increasing instability of magic to the numerous witch covens which were employed during the Age of Unification to support the Magtarian Kingdom’s expansion, and the subsequent counter deployment of magical individuals by various lesser nations.
