Edrigate
Once a small fortress town between the Greenpine Forest and Lapeam Peak. During the Age of Unification Edrigate served as a processing center and trade hub, stockpiling food to be shipped to Vardemhold and ores gathered from nearby mining settlements. Due to the large number of valuable materials stored within the town it soon became a target for thieves and raiders based out of the Greenpine Forest. This caused the leadership of Edrigate to begin to militarize the town. Building rings of fortifications and increasing guard numbers to dissuade pilfering. As criminal attacks on the town grew more brazen the town’s leadership drafted even more heavily from the local population, and began requisitioning nearby production centers to produce arms and armor for their defenses. This resulted in Edrigate becoming one of the most heavily fortified cities outside of the frontier. This fortification would ultimately allow the town to survive the rise of the undead of Lapeam Peak, acting as a key bastion to hold back the hordes and ultimately drive them back under the siege of it’s mighty cannons. For the next 20 years the city would stand as the invincible barrier shielding the rest of Ardland from the undead’s taint.
The city itself is impressive in its design, massive stone walls rise nearly 60 meters into the air, cannons placed at even increments along it’s top and large archery spires placed where walls intersect one another. The main wall forms an octagonal ring around the main bulk of the city, with a smaller mud wall built 50 meters out, allowing small farms and occasional civilian housing to be built with some protection. These outgrowths are strictly regulated to prevent them from obstructing firing lines and preventing them from providing enemy incursions with cover during a raid. The mud wall, while not durable enough to hold off a proper, armed strike, is sufficient in keeping the undead at bay and, in the case that the outer wall is ever breached, the deliberately lowered outer ring can easily be flooded, turning rich framing soil into muddy, treacherous terrain.
The inner section of the city is spartan and well maintained. Few buildings rise above the walls and those that do are capped with cannons and archery emplacements. The majority of buildings are a mixture of wood and red brick construction, with shingled roofs which help limit the effectiveness of burning arrows. While the people of Edrigate have a reputation for being paranoid and obsessively militaristic, their stalwart defense of the surrounding lands have earned them a begrudging respect from the people of Ardland.
