Disaster of Adrias

The city of Adrias is destroyed when a large-scale healing spell backfires, resulting in an influx of magical abominations and mutated creatures dubbed Daemons.

As the spell progressed the soldiers began to fall deathly ill and the mages began suffering from grevious pains all across their body. Some were warped and twisted as the magical energies began to flow out of control, growing additional limbs and horn-like growths across their bodies. At the climax of the ritual, the magical circle was broken, and a shockwave ripped across the city, vaporizing a large section of it and leveling much of what remained. Hundreds were killed instantly and Thousands died as a result of the devastation. The explosion heralded the arrival of unholy abominations which began to materialize around the mage's circle, slaughtering everything they came across. An ultimately doomed counter attack was launched resulting in even more casualties and the city was eventually quarantined and written off as a lost cause, left to the deformed creatures which now stalked its streets.
Following the loss of Adrias the magics of the world began to grow more wild and untamed. Similar events began occurring with ever increasing frequency throughout the Kingdom. Mages would be corrupted by the magic they cast, or have it produce unexpected results. At best the magic would simply fail, at worst the caster would be corrupted by the magic and turned into a horrid abomination which spread destruction and death to those around it. Eventually, King Estan I ruled the use of magic to be illegal and formed the Witch Hunters Guild to hunt down and execute those suspected of using magic.
