Heirs of Eridan

The Heirs of Eridan is a secret religious sect that grew out of the Children of Dawn. Like the Dawners, they believed that The Disaster was sent to cleanse Kaiter of the weight of the past to make way for something better, but they also believed that it was their sacred duty to continue that cleansing that began with The Disaster. The acts of destruction and violence conducted by The Heirs of Eridan were officially condemned by The Children of Dawn and considered unlawful both in the Settlements of Eastern Amrisa and in the Sanctuary Lands of Western Amrisa.   Although the culture of The Settlements was strongly influenced by the The Wisdom of Zaira and many denounced technology, some of the past knowledge was still considered essential for the survival of the Settlements. For example, scientific knowledge about medicine and agriculture was still considered necessary by many citizens of the Settlements.   Conversely, the Heirs of Eridan were vehemently against most science and technology from before the Disaster, and actively sought out books and technologies to destroy them. Some groups of Heirs would even seek to silence those who spoke out in favor of the knowledge of the past.   After 100 AD, when Eastern Amrisa began to trade with Western Amrisa, the Library of IFERA began to build small community libraries throughout the Settlements. In some cases, the Heirs would respond as extremists, conducting raids or trying to burn the new libraries to the ground.

Membership

Membership of the Heirs of Eridan is a closely guarded secret. All participate anonymously, wearing uniquely painted wooden masks over their faces and long shapeless robes. New members are invited to participate by receiving notes that provide the location of an upcoming Ceremony of Cleansing. They prove their dedication by bringing books or pre-Disaster tech to burn or meltdown. During the initiation, they are given their name as an Heir of Eridan and the location of the next Ceremony of Cleansing. As members participate more and become trusted, they increase in status and can be invited to raids or other activities.

Goddess of Renewal

On the Kaiterian Calendar, the month of Erider is named after Eridan, the goddess of time and renewal in ancient mythology. Eridan is often pictured as a beautiful woman sitting in a ring of fire, surrounded by flowers. The ring of fire represents the continuous, neverending cycle of ruin and renewal, while the flowers represent the new life growing out of the ashes of the past.   When Mount Oacana's eruption was predicted to take place during the month of Erider, some people began to proselytize that Eridan was launching a new cycle of renewal.
