Sezzlic in "From Belkush to Sedun"

Sezzlic Denk is one of the two protagonists in "From Belkush to Sedun," the other being Ethel Mezezi .

His Ancestry.

He was born in Jahamen , in Denk, Etha. His parents were Reba and Tefeg Denk, deriving their family name from the duchy in which they lived.   Tefeg, Sezzlic's father, was descended from the first Ethain migrants to the area, constituting part of the large Denk family which was entrusted with the region. His line had held Jahamen for several generations. It was part of the patrimony of Tefeg's father, whose second cousin ruled as duke. After his father's death, Tefeg inherited Jahamen. He married Reba when he was nearly twenty.   Reba, Sezzlic's mother, could trace her ancestry to several Filajidin chiefs. The Filajidin had been the original people of Denk before the Ethain invasion. After having been conquered, Reba's family accepted Ethain rule and were incorporated into the local power structures.   From this mix, Sezzlic inherited two sides of Denk: Conqueror and Conquered.

Upbringing.

As a baron's son, Sezzlic received a standard education of the nobility. The patron god of his family, and indeed much of Denk, was the Filajidin incorporated goddess Vivachash (Or Fifashash). She was the goddess of martial and duty, and as such her traits were very much so stressed in the young Sezzlic. Therefore, asides from the usual affinity with order and loyalty afforded to the nobility, Sezzlic would embody the dutiful knight- always in service to the kingdom.   As he grew, his character became one of justice and loyalty, showing deference to his elders and relatives. Respectful of the gods and devoted in following Ethaine 's principles, he was a model for his peers. Although virtuous and sincere, he was prone to emotional outbursts. Somewhat violent, as well, he also developed a deep-seated hatred for the Ethernian .   As a young child Sezzlic watched as the Seduni queen, Isora Mezezi, invaded Denk in retribution for other events. Many of the townsmen of the region, as well as many nobles that he had met, were summoned to fight the Ethernians. Few returned. Sponsored by Tefeg's own hatred for the northerners, Sezzlic learned to despise the Ethernians. The Ethernians were not a new feature of the region. They had been known to the Ethains for over five hundred years, and had operated in Denk as traders for several hundred. It isn't clear what about them Tefeg had found so detestable, but his influence would journey with Sezzlic to Ethernia, as well.

Entry into the Story.

Sezzlic's willingness to serve his king manifests in his service against the Seduni queen when she again invades. Several years of service lead him to Ethernia itself, fighting the residents in a pitched battle. Following the battle, he stayed in Ethernia attempting to locate the queen so that he could kill her. Failing this, he ended up in a duel with a local king and slew him. He was, shortly afterwards, detained by the palace guards.   It was made known to him that a young woman, Ethel, had convinced the guards to spare him for interrogation. She then convinced him that his life was to be ended unless he escaped with her. Requesting that he serve her as an escort to her home country in exchange for saving him again, the two snuck off.

Dynamics and Interactions.

Over the course of his time with Ethel, he will develop a rather close bond with her. A large part of this is due to the isolation he suffers due to most inhabitants of Ethernia not speaking Ethain. This forced him, the "bodyguard", to rely on her for most things and, ultimately, his way back home.   Sezzlic will represent duty in the dichotomy. Whereas Ethel is wrought over her role and as to whether she should accept it, Sezzlic knows his role and his path. He will play a large role in influencing the young woman. On the other hand, he still struggles, however ashamedly, with his own duties. He had risked his life, and indeed almost lost it, to try and assassinate the queen. Yet after the fact he seemed meek and almost scared at the prospects of another attempt. Part of his struggle will be to strengthen his resolution. As for his disdain for Ethernians, his time isolated to just one for over a year and a half would be crucial in alleviating this condition.   By the end of the story, Sezzlic Denk is a more resolute, and more understanding, man.
