Citadel of the Ages

The citadel of the ages is the fortress of the city of Zeadora. It gets its name from the confidence its builders had that it would never be taken by foreign forces. The citadel is an enormous concentric castle with a central keep, an inner and outer wall as well as dozens of towers off of the standard walls in order to get a commanding view for archers of the entire area. The central keep contains armories, habitation for thousands of people, food stores to last years, and dozens of sending scrolls for coordinating with armies come to relieve a potential siege.
The fortress is defended by an elite garrison of 500 soldiers, 300 of them being archers and the others being heavy infantry. This garrison will at times leave the citadel to help in the city but mainly exists to defend the citadel. The citadel is also defended with a curtain of defensive spells that block magic of all but a few individuals. Artillery finishes the defenses of this citadel, with half a dozen catapults and twice as many ballista for firing at opposing forces.

Purpose / Function

In times of crisis, wealthy businessmen, displaced nobles, government officials and as many other citizens as possible will be taken into the citadel in hopes of waiting out a siege that may have taken the rest of the city. It has never been actually used in this way but performed well in mock battles that have been conducted even against forces numbering 10 times as many as the defenders.
