Rules of Runesmithing

Brief

The Rules of Runesmithing are a set of guidelines written to protect both Runesmiths and their peers. This document is legally binding, and each runesmith will sign a printed copy when they finish their studies to ensure that they understand the laws and the consequences of breaking them.

What are Runesmiths?

Runesmiths are beings who have taken numerous years to study and become proficient in the design, creation and implementation of Runes. This is a highly sought after career, and their skills are in heavy demand. Each Runesmith typically has a school of magic that they specialize in, allowing for a less competition between them all. The most sought after Runesmiths are the elder ones who have so much experience under their belt that they're titled 'Master Runesmiths'; they're considered the elite of the elite.

Purpose

The purpose of these new rules for the Runesmith community is to protect the common folk, as well as the smiths themselves. The power they have over magic and materials can be considered overwhelming; we have heard your calls for them to be heavily regulated, and have worked to be fair for both sides. These rules and guidelines will help protect everyone, and while they may be considered a sizeable change from our current laws, they're for the best of everyone.

The Rules of Runesmithing are a set of rules and regulations brought into law to protect people buying goods made by Runesmiths. These regulations allow people to buy and trade runed items without worry of being injured or controlled. These rules also apply to Rune Tattooists.

Document Structure

Clauses

Base Knowledge

This section covers the very basics that all Runesmiths must know, and goes into depth with sub chapters. The basics of this are below.
Runesmiths must have the following knowledge
  • Must know official runes or have the capability of researching for them.
  • Must be able to tweak official runes within the legal definitions to best suit the needs of their customers.
  • Must keep up to date with rune laws and regulations within their work.

Illegal Runes

A Rune is considered illegal the moment it poses a risk to harm the persons' mind, body or soul in anyway. However, beings that work with runes are not exempt to laws via ignorance, and must always be up to date on Rune Legality Laws as written in the Rules of Runesmithing.
Illegal Rune Examples

  • Ownership Runes (Runes that bond the tattooed to another person)
  • Mind-Altering Runes (such as compulsion runes)
  • Control Runes
  • Physical Damage or Disabling Runes
The Illegal Runes of the rules are heavily documented and are the primary reason that the document is as updated as often as it is. These runes may have been used in the past and are now considered amoral, or have been restricted since runesmithing came into practice. That chapter covers the rune, what it was used for, and alternative versions.

Caveats

Upon graduation from Runesmithing Schools, all graduated persons will read through the most current version of the Rules of Runesmithing and sign and initial every chapter to ensure that they've read and understood what is expected of them. These will be printed out and left in their file, as a record that they've done what they need to after graduation.   Runesmiths and adjactent careers are heavily monitored by law; ignorance of any changes will not be considered an excuse and as a result if a Smith is caught breaking the law they will typically receive the full punishment. Depending on the severity the consequences can vary from going down a rank in the Runesmithing Grading, to fines, or even loss of right to work in the industry for a certain amount of time.

Publication Status

The Rules of Runesmithing are publically avaialable as a means of allowing the public to understand their rights while interacting with runesmiths and rune tattooists and their goods.
