Cyrus Adonis Character in Iron Stars | World Anvil

Cyrus Adonis

From the 'Personnel Files' of the Elysium Protectorate   Once a lean and unimposing figure Cyrus now towers over most men, his presence felt in any room he might step into. His eyes like a hawk's see all, a rich brown/hazel. He gives off an aura of authority and martial prowess His body rote by scars of countless battles on nameless battlefields. He can be seen most often in his Titan Armour - an Artefact of the time before The Scream and the collapse that followed. It's gleaming chrome and Silver and gold cape hard to miss as well as the gold plumage adorning it's helm and the glow of it's eyes in the darkness and the clink you the metallic feet on the ground. On his waist there is most often a sword held in a scabbard - a blade made to cut through the strongest armors as the disruption field hums when drawn. On the battlefield most often he uses a custom chromed Myrmidon Rifle ornamented with gold filigree depicting the great beasts and champions slain by it's wielder. On his arm a shield that once activated spreads a glowing golden force shield protecting the wearer from harm.   Biography: Cyrus was born on a secluded forest planet far from the hustle and bustle of normal civilization, from an early age he learnt to hunt and survive against the elements and natural hazards of the wilderness. His people were not by any stretch of the imagination out of touch with the rest of the universe they just preferred a simpler life, they traded good and exotic animals in return for building supplies and modern medicine and weaponry. When he came of age Cyrus was allowed to choose whether or not he wished to stay, he chose to leave the small planet in search of a better life. He applied his skills as a tracker and hunter on many a backwards worlds before he applied to join the Greenbriar Colony as an Armsman in Helios One. After a gruelling selection process he was given passage and hoped to use his talents to better the colony and help conquer a new frontier.     His dropship was burning through the atmosphere when The Scream took place, his pilot lost control and the starboard engine blew out as they punched through the cloud layer. The crash killed the majority of his comrades and the fellow colonists and surveyors they'd had on board. Cyrus himself was badly injured and if it wasn't for the squad medic probably would have bled out in the wreckage of the dropship. All told four of them survived the crash, not that they knew it at the time but they had crashed far to the east of the main colony and all of their comm equipment was either out of range or slagged with the ship. Cyrus didn't really think anyone else had survived either, and if they had they'd be in the same position his squad was in right now.     Over the subsequent year and half his small squad moved slowly west anyway, in hopes of finding the main colony location knowing it was somewhere in that general direction. However survival was hard and not all of them made it, two of the four that had survived the initial crash had died on their journey. One, a sergeant named Xander had died of his wounds. The other a surveyor named Maurice had been eaten by a Balvarine when he happened upon it whilst looking for food, ironic. Only Cyrus and the Medic Taggart had survived the ordeal. Eventually they bumped into a friendly Greenbriar patrol a few miles east of Port New Nieu Rotterdam.   ARES   Cyrus Adonis was an early member of Task Force Phoenix and the beginning of his career was marked by clearing up several bounties, and assisting in several key battles against the Remnant, notably the Battle of Terezinho. A firebrand almost from the beginning, Adonis espoused a very militant view of the United Nations of Worlds and its considerable power, believing that those at the borders should be brought in no matter the cost.   As the Remnant War dragged on, he claimed to have been contacted by an MES presence called Ares, that charged him to end the war as soon as possible, and that there was other work for this 'chosen' champion to complete. This meeting, true or not, spurred on some kind of darker ambition within Adonis, and upon his next unity council meeting after this he began calling himself 'Warmaster' , though the title never caught on beyond his own sycophantic followers.   Creusa   Cyrus began to increasingly push for his own independence as his 'Myrmidon' movement went through UNW space, notably taking a foothold on the planet Aslief where his chosen second in command once ruled.   President Kincaid saw the operation to take Creusa, the industrial backbone of the Remnant becoming more and more ambitious as details of its vast planetary defenses and generally hostile terrain emerged. She likewise implored Adonis to bring the war to a close as quickly as possible to prevent needless suffering. It was projected that with their industrial heartlands taken, the Remnant would quickly surrender.   This proved to be the moment of schism.   The Red Sangha were also employed for this operation and Adonis used them to accomplish this pacification, allowing them to sweep the defense platforms around the planet and kill any they found aboard in order to get them under control quickly. Civilian casualties mounted as UNW forces made planetfall in the three floating cities below. Vicious street fighting erupted and Cyrus exacerbated the violence by stating even Remnant soldiers who surrendered would be executed, but in his mind it was a preferable fate to his forces digging them out and making them suffer   The choice to fight and die, or surrender and die had Remnant soldiers, notably their Chainveil elite electing to fight. Bombings, shootings, sabotage of critical infrastructure, and electronic attacks against UNW interests continued, though Cyrus and his Myrmidons pulled out, leaving the regular army to deal with the mess.   It was during this hasty retreat in victory that his ships were swept along by some sort of MES storm, and ended up at Heras.   The Protectorate   Cyrus claimed once again he was visited by Ares and openly admitted this MES expression chided him for the sloppy fight at Creusa, and for ignoring the dozens of more balanced and educated leaders giving him advice- even when he asked them for it.   Founding his new empire the ruined city of Mytikas, the shame of his last endeavor only spurred Adonis to double down on his previous mistakes. Columns of grav-bikes roared in Heran villages and he demanded they surrender and join. Often times sloppy bribes were attempted, with crates of technology the natives had no idea how to use left behind only to be looked upon with fear and confusion.   Trying to make a name for himself quickly, Adonis entered a blasted region in the center of the planet called the Garden of Bones. A great battle had been fought there decades before and now the wrecks of fighting machines and the unburied dead of both sides were becoming problematic.   He defeated an aspect of the Overlord that had been locked there inside the remains of the once proud World Tree, and uncovered a mystical spear he would never get a chance to use.   Upon his return, the nearby city of Hephesta approached the Protectorate for assistance. A ghoul host was marching toward their city, and a combined force seemed to be the only thing capable of holding them back. Adonis committed to the fight quickly, eager to gain allies and show his supremacy to the native fighting men.   The fight was brutal, and even the disciplined phalanx like formations of the planet defenders were unable to cope with the sheet numbers of ghouls. In a moment of desperation, Adonis radioed to orbit for a strike. Dozens of fleet officers, army officers, and city officials attempted to advise him that the current Protectorate ships were not fitted nor designed for this kind of work, but the First Regent of the Protectorate overrode those concerns and ordered the strike anyway.   Predictably, when expert advice from dozens of minds is ignored, disaster happened. The bombardment annihilated everything in the Garden. Hephestans, Protectorate, and Ghoul, the bombing was indiscriminate and the firestorm not only robbed the Protectorate of its trained fighting men and leadership, but the loss of the wreck-yard known as the Garden also removed any chance the Protectorate had for salvaging heavy equipment of any kind.
