Garren Sabah Character in In A Mirror | World Anvil

Garren Sabah

Garren Sabah, the sixth king of Naemore, the royal admiral, and the honest king. He taught us all by example, showing us that a world of honesty is a better place to live than the mire of deceptions. May he be remembered as a king who worked tirelessly to maintain the peace and succeeded even while instability consumed our allies. We will not let his hard work be for nothing, even though he has left us without an heir, Naemore will endure.
— Excerpt, Record of the Eulogy of Garren Sabah

The Summer King

Garren's ancestor, Jarus Sabah was known as the bringer of summer for ending the long winters ended when he founded Naemore but none of his descendants were ever born during the summer but then Garren was born during the longest day of the year. The snow had even melted off of Karai Castle in that sweltering summer.

A Heart for Another

As Garren grew older he had feelings for someone but his future had already been decided. His parents forbid him from communicating with her afraid this would anger the family of the queen-to-be but her companion and his were able to exchange messages over immense distances. Eventually the king and queen realized they could not stop him and allowed them to exchange letters but not to meet. He continued to exchange messages with her for the rest of his life but he stuck to the path his parents had planned for him.

Negotiations

"This book never lies and neither do I. So why do you come to this castle and insult the people of Naemore with your deceptions?"
— Garren Sabah
The sixth king was a honest man and notoriously impossible to negotiate with. He laid everything on the table and expected everyone else to do the same. On at least one occasion he embarrased a powerful merchant by leaving the Blue Book on a shelf in the merchant's office and later reading aloud what it overheard there when the merchant lied to the entire court.   He was criticized by some for his actions in lessening the power of the throne by distributing some duties, responsibilities, and decision-making power to the lords and administrators. Garren defended his actions not only by the merits which he saw in them but by the support gained among his allies - no king has had such loyal allies since Jarus Sabah himself.

The Heirless King

On the seventh of Moonpass in the year of Naemore 150, Garren Sabah died. The cause of death has not been made public which has caused rumors to spread like wildfire in the height of a dry summer. Garren never sired any children and now the throne of Naemore sits empty for the first time since it was carved. The future of Naemore is uncertain.

The Blue Book

The companion of the sixth king is the Blue Book often simply called the Book. This winged tome is not intimidating, strong, or world-changing but it is also no mere collection of pages. Through this everpresent ally the king was able to retrieve any words that had been spoken in its presence. It recorded the exact words his parents spoke when he was born and the whispers of doubt at his coronation.   It is because of the Blue Book that Garren became known as the honest king. While not able to discern between truth and lies it is something that could reveal discrepencies between the words of the past and those of the present as well as those spoken in private and then in public. Garren himself stated that the book would confront him with his own lies - even the small ones - and that he decided at a young age to embrace honesty.
