Potions Overview

Intro

Potions in The World of Idoria TTRPG, as well as in the world itself, are incredibly versatile and come in many different forms to fulfill the desires of any Adventurer who may need them! Potions come in a variety of sizes and application methods that have been standardized between several civilizations; although not everyone conforms to these standards, the average civilization wishing to have any global influence adheres to them.

Dose Sizes

Sizes range from the humble "Vial" which contains just the bare minimum for the desired potion to take effect, to the standard "Flask" which is the default dose size for most potions, to the mighty "Bottle" that boasts the largest dose size of the three.

Due to their tiny size, potions stored in Vials don't quite have as long of a lasting effect as the Flask. Typically this results in 1/2 the Duration of the potion effect. For this reason, Vials are roughly 1/2 the cost of the standard Flask's cost for the same effect.

Thanks to standardization between developed civilizations, the Flask contains the standard-Duration dose size. When buying or crafting potions, mages and Tinkerers, alike, default to a Flask unless their needs differ from the standards provided.

Sometimes one needs a larger bulk option for their medicinal needs. That niche is filled by the Bottle, whose dose size exceeds the standard Flask's by three times! This has the consequence of extending potion effects by the same amount (three times see Duration), resulting in very long lasting potions. Buying or crafting in bulk does come at a cost, however, as a Bottle is three times the cost of a Flask.

Strengths

Potions also come in a variety of application methods! From "Contact" potions that are designed to absorb through the skin, to the standardized "Ingested" potions that are taken orally, to the highly-effective, but expensive, "Injected" potions that are injected by a needle directly into the body.

The Contact application method, while cheap and easy to apply, results in an ineffective method of transporting the potion into the body; a staggering 1/2 of the effectiveness (Strength) compared to that of the standardized Ingested application method. This, similarly to the Vial's situation, results in Contact potions being 1/2 the cost vs the Ingested method for the same desired potion effect.

Similarly to the Flask, Ingested potions are the industry standard! Having the perfect balance of cost and effectiveness (Strength), Ingested potions are the default when buying or making potions.

Occasionally, however, rubbing or drinking one's medicine isn't nearly effective enough. Luckily a brilliant Tinkerer from The Nation of Xylotile discovered a way to get an even more effective potion delivered to the body. By bypassing the liver and injecting a modified version of the potion serum into the body directly, they discovered that the Injected application method was nearly three times more potent than that of the Ingested variant! This exciting breakthrough was relatively recent, however, and due to this, Injected potions tend to be three times as expensive as the Ingested kind.

Nomenclature

When writing down a prescription for a potion you wish to receive or a formula for a potion you wish to craft, remember the proper nomenclature: "<Dose Size> of <Application Method> <Potion Effect>" (eg: "Bottle of Injected Instant Health", "Vial of Ingested Might", "Flask of Contact Acid", etc...) This helps communicate what exactly you are wishing to obtain, or what exactly you are trying to give people.

Effects

There are many potion effects that one can buy or make! Below is a table of all of the potions and a simple explanation of what they do. See Potions for all of the specific details regarding individual pricing, Strength, and duration.

Flasks = Default/Standard Duration

Bottles = 3x Duration of Flasks

Contact = 1/2x as effective (Strength) vs Ingested

Ingested = Default/Standard Strength
