The Vault

The Vault of Tenglan - By Cleris Dumont 838AP
A financial institution with branches in every Tenglan City that receives essence coin deposits gives out withdrawals and provides loans for private and public use. Vaults also provide consultancy services to help individuals or companies manage their wealth more effectively.

Vault staff:

Private Guards: Each vault branch has several security guards for minor on-site issues like difficult customers or opportunist pickpockets.
Vault Tellers: Face to face operators that help individuals deposit or withdraw essence coin and they can also authorise small loans.
Aurae Sensepaths: Beings with enhanced Aura sense abilities) that remain in the background and are only called upon if a security vial goes missing or if the underground tube network has been infiltrated.
Overseers: Each branch has around 2 Aura-powered beings that manage and protect the branch if no wizards are available. (See below)
The Wizard Guild provides one of their respected members to remain on site and protect the store from thieves skilled in Aurae abilities, specifically those connected to the Air element. This wizard would also function as the branch manager.
On the rare occasions that a Wizard steals essence, an Overseer is sent in to replace them, and the Wizard Guild would pay the vaults an acceptable compensation package whilst the offending Wizard is never seen again.

Direct deposit transactions:

Before the introduction of vaults, shopkeepers always feared a thief could enter the shop and steal all the shop's stored essence savings. Nowadays, any establishment that wants direct access to a vault will pay them to install a customised tube system connecting the shop's essence till directly to the vault's storage safe. This efficient underground system was introduced during King Crannough Tireste's era in 695 AP.   The tube network is monitored by sensepaths and if they notice a security risk will call in the vault overseer or wizard to deal with the problem. The tubes themselves are made of Wizard Glass, and so only the most powerful Sorce practitioners can break them open.   If a vault branch has wizard protection on-site, the overseers are free to go to shops and make sure all essence deposited was received at the underground storage safe. They then document the amount with an official vault signature. This service costs shops 5% essence per transaction and is known as Essence-securing. If a shop prefers to take essence directly to a vault using a vial, then no transaction cost is incurred. Instead, the shop pays a yearly subscription to use the vault's depositing services. (They also need to pay for the vial).

How do Vaults make money?

  1. Overseers 5% insurance fees for Essence-securing.
  2. A 1% charge on all essence withdrawals.
  3. A monthly 1% charge based on the essence held in your account.
  4. Installing of tube network into shops.
  5. Selling the various Storage Essence Vials (Aka Sev’s) to shops and individuals.
There are a variety of vial sizes with many security options such as Aura-printing and sense-protection - using the bank sensepaths. The vials offer a higher storage capacity than regular essence coins and with the advanced security options in place, are invaluable for any shop keepers that prefer hand-delivering deposits.

Who owns the Vaults (and gets the profits)?

This is an intriguing question to which neither I, nor any of my archivian friends have the answer. I used to believe it was the crown with either the King or the The Queen managing their operations but Claytus Tome assures me that his interactions with the Queen have proven she has nothing to do with the vaults.   This, therefore, leaves just King Johan Ganay, but I cannot believe Her Majesty would allow her husband (and consequently her most dangerous rival) access to so much wealth. He already governs an army far more substantial than her own.   I can only presume there is some mysterious owner getting fat from all the essence profit the vaults pile up daily from all over Tenglan.   It is also interesting there are no records showing when the first Vault was introduced - Even someone with my exceptionally long lifetime and etched memory cannot remember when they first opened. Strange but true. Either way, Vaults offer a useful service to all Imperials, yet I do not trust them and so refuse to use them. So, how do I protect my essence coin? Simply put, I spend it all on Greggle.
