Nannan Sauriv

Eleele Hlb.,m

Long ago, even before The Draconic War, people needed to encrypt their most valuable documents. Where most used simple cyphers, the Nannan Sauriv cypher was considered the most difficult to crack of its time. This cypher encrypted the Scroll of Return, and many more mysterious documents from that time.

Origins

The Nannan Sauriv cypher has been created by a close right hand of Luna. As soon as she had disappeared, her priests began writing down everything she had told them over the years. Her prophecies and knowledge were not allowed to fall into enemy hands. Thus they were encrypted using this cypher and then sealed away worldwide with the best protection they could give it.

Current Day Use

In the present day, nobody knows of this cypher. Nobody, but a tiny group of people: the two encryption clerks of the dwarves, two magistrates of the high elves, and three master tinkerers of the gnomes. They still use the cypher to seal away their most priced information and document. They may work together, but everyone has secrets to guard.   However, rumours are going around of a few more people knowing of this cypher. Where they got the information is unknown, but they are certainly being watched.

Cypher

The cypher and its rules are fairly simple:
↓↓← | ↑↑→
When converting from normal to encrypted, follow the arrows for each column. The pipe symbol ( | ) tells to go to the next column.
! Tip: do the vertical conversion first and the horizontal ones second for each row.
So, let's apply that to our current alphabet. Note how the starting alphabet is ordered.
| a | b | c | d | e | 0 | 5 |
| f | g | h | i | j | 1 | 6 |
| k | l | m | n | o | 2 | 7 |
| p | q | r | s | t | 3 | 8 |
| u | v | w | x | y | 4 | 9 |
| z | . | , | ! | ? | ' | _ |
This marks the start of the alphabet and the order of the characters, numbers, and punctuation. The underscore symbol here resembles the spacebar. This is a highly important step when it comes to both encrypting and decrypting a text! Now, we shift all the columns.
| u | l | w | n | y | 2 | 9 |
| z | q | , | s | ? | 3 | _ |
| a | v | c | x | e | 4 | 5 |
| f | . | h | ! | j | ' | 6 |
| k | b | m | d | o | 0 | 7 |
| p | g | r | i | t | 1 | 8 |
With the vertical shift done, we can now shift horizontally.
| l | w | n | y | 2 | 9 | u |
| _ | z | q | , | s | ? | 3 |
| v | c | x | e | 4 | 5 | a |
| 6 | f | . | h | ! | j | ' |
| b | m | d | o | 0 | 7 | k |
| 8 | p | g | r | i | t | 1 |
There is it, the final encrypted alphabet. All that's left to do is to set the original and encrypted alphabet side to side and start writing with the Nannan Sauriv cypher.
