Timber
Timber is used for crafts and building (of ships, dwellings, and other structures). Different types of timber are used for different purposes:
- Oak is used for building large buildings, especially pillars, doorways and thresholds. Also used for shipbuilding, machines, and furniture.
- Fig is used for scaffolding and supporting columns.
- Beech doesn't rot in water. Used in coastal construction and shipbuilding (for masts and beams).
- Cedar is long-lasting and used to support heavy weights. Used a floor and ceiling boards. Cedar is also used for shipbuilding (lightweight planking).
- Fir is used for doors and roofing beams.
- Laurel is used for fine furniture.
- Cypress is resistant to rot and moisture. Used for building as with cedar, particularly at the coast.
- Elm is very durable.
- Walnut has long beams so useful for ceilings and planks.
- Olive used for small beams and fences.
- Pine is used for buildings.
