Castle Elchorr
Castle Elchorr stands at the eastern edge of the Natarrine Sands, a brooding sentinel against the harsh, sun-baked landscape. Built as a military bastion to defend against raiders, its thick, sun-bleached walls and narrow slits for archers speak to its unwavering commitment to warfare and defiance. Unlike many other fortresses across Teros, Castle Elchorr has avoided ruin, though the conflicts within its walls have left deep scars of another kind.
The castle’s location is highly strategic, as it controls the only road through the Natarrine Sands to the port town of Natarr on the coast. Its tall towers overlook the barren landscape, providing ideal vantage points to spot travellers or caravans attempting the arduous journey through the sands. The main gate, a heavy, reinforced structure flanked by twin turrets, is always well-guarded, and its faded banners still flutter defiantly in the hot winds.
While Castle Elchorr remains under the nominal control of Forbin's Peacekeepers under Captain Thaysis, it is the Makkun warlord Maxan Roshar who truly rules here.
Once in the pay of the Terosian forces, Roshar betrayed his homeland during the War of Salvation, swearing fealty to Forbin in exchange for power and position. This treachery won him the castle, and he now commands a small army of loyal warriors, enforcing his will over the vital route between the sands and the coast.
Roshar has seized upon this position of power, transforming Castle Elchorr into a hub of extortion and smuggling. Caravans and travellers heading to and from Natarr are forced to pay exorbitant tolls to pass through, while those who refuse often find their goods “confiscated” or their journeys cut short by a gang of armed thugs. Roshar’s thugs control the flow of goods, taking their share of every transaction and ensuring that nothing moves through the sands without his approval.
Captain Thaysis, a Peacekeeper officer stationed here with only a small contingent of soldiers, has little authority over Roshar or his activities. A stern and disciplined woman, she tries to uphold the Peacekeeper code of conduct but is constantly undermined. Roshar openly disregards her commands, and his men mock the Peacekeepers behind their backs. Thaysis has attempted to appeal to her superiors in Forbin, but her reports have been ignored, leaving her isolated and powerless, unable to curb the warlord’s ambitions.
Life inside Castle Elchorr is a dangerous game of alliances and betrayals. Roshar’s ambitions do not end at merely holding the castle. He is rumoured to be consolidating power, gathering support among the disaffected, and expanding his network of smugglers and enforcers. Many whisper that he plans to turn on Forbin once he has amassed enough strength, using the castle as a base to carve out his own dominion.
Castle Elchorr, once a proud bastion of defence, has become a den of corruption and brutality.
